Previewing Boxer v. Fiorina
MSNBC ^ | September 1, 2010 | Tom Curry and Carrie Dann

Posted on 09/01/2010 8:31:03 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

At this point in a re-election race, secure Democratic senators in Democratic-leaning states generally poll at a comfortable 55 percent or better in the matchup against a Republican opponent (Sen. Ron Wyden of Oregon and Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland are examples).

But that’s not the case in California, where three-term Sen. Barbara Boxer will square off against GOP challenger Carly Fiorina in the pair's first debate Wednesday night. An average of the five most recent public polls shows Boxer getting 45 percent to Fiorina’s 41 percent. About 12 percent of respondents remain undecided.

President Barack Obama has trekked to California twice in recent months to help raise funds for Boxer, and Vice President Joe Biden held a fundraiser for her in July.

“I don't travel for just anybody,” Obama told attendees at a San Francisco fundraiser in May. “But when it comes to Barbara Boxer, I'm a lot like many of you, which is, if she calls and she says, ‘I need some help,’ then we're going to give her some help...”

While not as astonishing as Republican Sen. Scott Brown’s upset win last January in Massachusetts, a Fiorina victory would be dramatic. California hasn't elected a Republican senator since 1988. That was also the last time a Republican presidential candidate carried California.

Democrats enjoy an edge in party registration, with about 7.5 million Democrats to 5.2 million Republicans in the state; there are 3.4 million registered independents.

Boxer won her seat in 1992, lifted on the wave led by Bill Clinton in what was then dubbed “the Year of the Woman.” She beat conservative Los Angeles television and radio pundit Bruce Herschensohn by about half a million votes, or 5 percentage points.

It’s an article from MSNBC, and I thought that Fiorina just kicked Boxer (sorry, Senator Boxer’s) butt in the debate. Now, we will see how much that matters in our media. Probably not too much...

I can’t wait until the day when people call her “Former Senator” Boxer.

Fiorina presents as an attractive, bright, capable, pleasant woman. Boxer? A rancid crank.

Boxer has a way of taking out the opposition in the final days of an election.

TKO Fiorina. How did Boxer ever get elected? Not a very bright bulb.

Generally she's had very mediocre competition who did not have the convictions to stand for anything (At least Mrs. Fiorina stood her ground for pro-Life, 2nd Amendment, and repeal of the so-called 'Assault Weapon' ban into tonight's debate).

Pre-internet days the media was able to tightly control the 'news' and shape Ms. Boxer as 'moderate' to main-stream (4 months of non-stop propaganda prior to the election had its effect).

And of course Ms. Boxer would always drop some slanderous 'surprise' the weekend before the election. The media would play it up - and after the election we'd find out the accusations were false or ill-founded.

With the MSM weakened, and with a competent opposition candidate - I think (and pray) that Ms. Boxer's days in the Capitol are numbered.

Between now and November the MSM's energy will be devoted to discouraging conservative voters from showing up to the polls, and encouraging leftists to vote... That will be their constant drumbeat.

I guess a dim bulb looks pretty good in the dark of CA. :-)

I watched the debate. It was a knockout! Fiorina won. But, it’s one thing to win a debate and another to win an election. Fiorina was workman-like in demolishing boxer but California voters are just plain stupid!

Local SF media is basically declaring BB the winner.

The DNC and the MSM are identical twins.

I felt Karly won. She was far more articulate, and she kept bringing up Boxer's record, or lack thereof, in creating original legislation. Babs kept trying to bring out the "but HP outsourced thousands of jobs," and Karly kept bringing it back to the sorry business climate in California. Karly also hammered Boxer on the Central Valley, the double-digit unemployment in metropolitan areas, and how Boxer didn't represent or serve the WHOLE state of California. I was impressed. Karly also stood her ground on abortion, saying that she was pro-life because her hubby's mum was told to abort him, and she didn't. The questions were vapid and typical leftist softballs to Boxer, who wouldn't stand a chance if the debate came to Fresno and all us surly rednecks showed up for the fun.....
