Sarah Palin's Vague Debt Threat
The National Journal ^ | July 29, 2011 | John Hudson

Posted on 07/28/2011 11:37:18 PM PDT by 2ndDivisionVet

This afternoon Sarah Palin issued a vague threat to freshman Republicans just ahead of the House vote on a bill to reduce the deficit and raise the debt ceiling. Does Palin want Republicans to vote it down? She wouldn't say precisely. On her Facebook page, Palin cited quotations from a 2010 letter she issued to Republicans reminding them that they "campaigned on a promise to rein in out-of-control government spending... promises that you must keep." She punctuated her reminder with an ominous post script: "P.S. Everyone I talk to still believes in contested primaries."

So does that mean she's threatening to run hard-right candidates against Republicans who vote for the bill supported by House Speaker Boehner in the next election? A number of conservative Republicans were upset that the GOP's Cut Cap and Balance bill was abandoned. But those left puzzling over her Facebook postings were just as confused as we are.

Sheila Marikar at ABC News writes:

"That could be a threat -- suggesting that she won’t support members of Congress who vote to raise the debt ceiling – or a reference to her 2012 aspirations."

CNN's political unit:

"Palin, who is considering a bid for the White House in 2012, has said raising the debt ceiling is inevitable, but that Republicans "better get something out of it." She has also been a proponent of the "Cut, Cap, and Balance" pledge passed through the Republican-controlled House and failed in the Senate."

But Jim Geraghty at National Review has it all figured out:

"If she were any clearer, they would have woken up with horse’s heads in their beds this morning."

For Geraghty, it's clear she's asking them to vote against the Boehner bill. Giving Boehner a little support, he justifies the speaker's position.

Of course, in the eyes of John Boehner and his allies, his plan is the best remaining option to stick to the principles that propelled their campaigns, rein in out-of-control government spending, and so on. And it’s not like Boehner’s plan is generating much pats on the back from “the Left in the media.”

Okay, if she's not the de facto head of the GOP, the Tea Party movement and the shadow president, why are there hundreds of articles like this being written by the major media to parse her words, like Kremlinologists used to try and figure out 'Who's Who' based on where certain people are standing at the May Day parade? Seen any articles on Barack Obama's, Tim Pawlenty's, Mitt Romney's, John Boehner's or Jon Huntsman's Facebook or Twitter messages recently?

And yet, she called CCB, which would raise the debt ceiling $2.4 TRILLION, the “right plan.”

Palin's already running the show. Every other player, from the Prez to the Capitol building janitor, is a supporting cast member.

A truly amazing woman, and the most powerful, natural-born leader since Patton.

I'm in awe.

Doesn’t sound like a threat. Sounds like a reminder. “You guys ran on cutting spendind and balancing the budget. If you cave there are others who will run for your seat who will see what happened to you and will replace you.” Good for Sarah.

I’m sure this puts tears in boner’s (pronounced bay-ner) eyes.

Yes, she IS already running the show. I was momentarily surprised when I read those words, but then realized how true they are.

;-D

Nice.

Love Palin, but I have to admit I’m more than a little upset with her today. She goes and helps get McCain reelected, only to have that shriveled old scrotum call me and my fellow Tea Party patriots hobbits....Infuriating.

How much does this alternative POS raise the debt ceiling?

Exactly, but you know the media has to spin her words for some sort of negative connotation.

You will have to understand, she owed that one time debt to McCain.
After all, had not McCain not picked her, she would not have had a national platform to show her leadership skills.

Hold that against her if u wish, but she repaid a one-time debt.

You never did get me that list of elected officials from your party that I asked you for. Aren’t there any? How can you be a political party without office-holders? Sounds more like a coffee klatsch or a book club. Real political parties get people into office, they vote on bills, they make the tough decisions, govern and put themselves out there. You know, like a lady who went from city council to mayor to governor to vice presidential nominee. If you want to play “Fantasy Football” with this debt ceiling debate, have at it, but don’t pretend that your little party will have any real impact on the outcome.

Well, your party is going to have a great impact on the outcome. In fact, you control the nation's purse strings.

And every single plan your party has advanced raises the debt ceiling by trillions of dollars, just like Obama and Reid want.

Thanks a heap.

Palin owes McCain nothing more, especially after the bastard beat up two girls as inferior candidates without admitting that he spent three months of the presidential race giving a serial concession speech.

Nothing vague about it...if they break from the party, we’re going to do everything in our power to replace them.

SHE does not favor an increase in the debt ceiling and IF she were president, she would not ask for one. But as she sees it now, that it is highly IMPROBABLE, with the pubbies controlling one branch, that it would ever pass. So go for the short term, get the balanced budget amendment, and ELECT someone who will stop it and drop it sooner rather than later.

Could not agree more. Noticed I said a one-time debt, not ongoing debt.
