JACKSON, Miss. - At a fundraiser at a country club in Mississippi this evening that was expected to raise a record-breaking $1.7 million, Mitt Romney defended the Republican Party against its reputation as the "party of the rich" explaining that really, it is a party focused on helping the poor.

"We're accused, by the way - in our party - of being the party of the rich," Romney said. "And it's an awful moniker, because that's just not true. We're the party of people who want to get rich. And we're also the party of people who want to care to help people from getting poor. We want to help the poor.

"We also want to make sure people don't have to become poor," Romney said. "And we know what it takes to keep people from becoming poor."

This was Romney's second fundraiser of the day, his first in Louisiana raising at least $2 million, bringing the campaign's tally for the day to $3.7 million.

Romney himself seemed taken aback by the night's success, which a campaign aide said a finance analyst had determined was the single largest political fundraising event in Mississippi's history...

Darn, if that doesn’t pass as one of truly most ineffective slogans or defenses I’ve ever heard! What’s he paying these campaign sages for—fashion advice?

Besides being a liberal, Romney is a ditz when speaking. Will be terrible debater, stutters, can’t make a point. These quotes of his about the rich and poor is an example of his poor abiity to speak and make sense. He has foot in mouth disorder.

Vastly better version: The Democrats are the party of the poor, and they want to make you poor so you are beholden to them.

“It's been said that the Republican party is the party for the rich and the democrat party is the party for the poor and downtrodden. A party needs to get as many votes possible to win an election. In order for the Republican party to win elections and maintain power they must create opportunities for as many people as possible to become and stay rich. What do the democrats need to do to win and maintain their power?”

“Party of the people who WANT to be rich”! That’s got a nice ring to it, like an uppercut from George Foreman. Couple this with the dud trial balloons of Condi Rice and Tim Pawlenty, and you might say that we’ve got ourselves one damn shaky candidate. *sigh* Bob

And now that I’m rant worthy.

STFU regarding what I want. How the hell do you know if I want to be rich. I just want to survive.

Jackass

actually its a pretty good answer. If you’re poor and want to be rich, GOP is the party for you because free market and low taxes increase job opportunities for everyone

Not Mitt’s finest hour, I’d have to agree. I get what he was trying to get across, but it didn’t really work, IMHO. The word “successful” instead of rich might have worked better here, given the Obama/MSM line of attack on Romney’s wealth. Now, I don’t think Romney made an epic gaffe along the lines of the crud Obama has been saying of late (and before), but I do think he missed an opportunity to sell himself to skeptical base voters.

The question is, what will see come convention time and the debates? Romney’s people and the GOP have made some smart moves in previous months, derailing a number of Obama’s re-election team’s lines of attack (remember “Dog Gate”?) Right now, though, it seems like Mitt has been on cruise control for a few weeks, much the way he was during many of the GOP primary debates. That’s not going to get it done. He’s competitive in all the battleground states right now, and he needs to capitalize on that. Voters know Obama is a failure, now give them a clear vision of why you’ll be better for them and the country, Mr. Romney.

The GOP is more the party of people that want to be free.

The GOP isn’t the party of free market and small government. Every single GOP administration has increased the size of government and the amount of regulation. Just like the Dems, the GOP is the party of crony capitalism and privilege for the elites.

Ok, other than you just being one of those “bash Romney because he breathing” posters, you tell me what you would have said.
