What percentage of blacks were Republican from 1860 to 1964?

Help me understand.
Are you saying that the Civil rights movement was the turning point for Blacks towards the democrats or was it the Great Society? I always thought it was the New Deal.

The New Deal moved Northern Blacks to the Democrats (though not so much that on occasion they wouldn’t support a GOP candidate). Southern Blacks, who mostly couldn’t vote, tended to stay GOP until the early ‘60s. Johnson’s signing the Civil Rights Act and the radicalization of the Black community by the late ‘60s sealed the deal, and they generally vote as a complete Democrat bloc now (to their detriment). As a result, Blacks haven’t been mainstream voters (in comparison to average voting habits) in over 50 years.
