Bill Kristol: Palin Would Be 'Formidable' Presidential Candidate

Former vice presidential candidate and Alaska Republican Gov. Sarah Palin would prove "formidable" in a 2016 run for president, Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol predicted Thursday.

"She's a huge political talent. She has a real populist streak, and a real feel for, sort of, middle America in a way that very few politicians do," Kristol told MSNBC's "Morning Joe."

"The truth is, she might be kind of formidable," he added.

Her biggest obstacle, Kristol maintained, would be explaining why she stepped down as Alaska's governor before serving her entire term.

Kristol advised the next Republican nominee to "spend some time talking to her," because she "has a feel for what people out there care about, and a way to formulate things, and she should be part of the conversation."

Kristol revealed a list of his nine top possible Republicans who could vie for the nation's top office. In light of New Jersey Republican Gov. Chris Christie's troubles over the "bridge-gate" scandal, Kristol predicted the Republican establishment would instead rally behind former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.

"Jeb Bush will be the establishment candidate," Kristol said. "I think [Chris] Christie's in trouble. I think Jeb is much more likely to run than people have thought. And he will have formidable establishment support."(continued)

After a statement like this, Bill Kristol can no longer be considered the poster child for the neocons.

I had to re-read Kristol's statement a few times myself .... didn't he completely pan and disregard Palin as a "serious" candidate back in 2008 and again in 2012?

IIRC, this is the first positive thing Kristol's said about Palin.

Is he terminally ill or something?

Reagan in a dress.

I thought that same exact thought the first time I heard her speak, which was when she was announced as McCain's VP selection.

I often wonder "how many of us had that exact same thought?" Michael Reagan did, which I think puts us in pretty good company. :-)

I don't know if she has a future in politics -- I'd support her choice no matter what. She has to do what's best for her and her family. I get that.

I do think she's as close to Reagan as we'll see in the remainder of my lifetime and given the opportunity I'd enthusiastically vote for her again. I just cannot see pulling the lever for any of the named GOPe candidates that are already out there, and frankly, I cannot think of a GOP candidate aside from Palin that I'd crawl over broken glass to go vote for.

The history revisionists on this thread have assured me many times that Kristol has thought (and stated) Sarah Palin is the cat's whiskers since McQueeg picked her for VP; the best thing since sliced bread. I'm not sure, but I think that kind of revision is the mark of a "cult of personality."

I remember it as you do: Kristol always had to work very hard to conceal his laughter at the mere mention of her name.

Truth be told, I would too. But, she has some 'splaining to do for her actions of the past month or so.

It’s sad however to realize she will not run for POTUS anytime in the near future IMHO.

Once again it was on the news a couple of days ago, that the Democrats were united and were agreeing on their positions,

.. and the Republicans were not able to present their position because they could not come to an agreement within the party. Dumb! right! Totally ineffective.

Some how we must actually decide on what is important and stick to it as a party. Conservatives are stubborn and contrary it seems. WHY Oh Why are we so hard headed? It gets nothing done and sets them up for ridicule.

We do agree on the right to have and keep firearms, according to the rules and not for drunks or criminals, we do agree on freedom of choices and freedom of movement, etc.,, we agree abortion is not legal, and is murder. we believe in the right of private property. We do know we must cut the run away spending, Immigration is in need of some enforced principles. We know immigrants are told to vote for Democrats because they are for the poor. Partly a lie, and Republicans are for the rich, partly a lie in regard to pushing down the needy. We simply MUST FIND a way to effectively get our story out, and our stand on issues to be understood, clearly. MO!

We will never be able to overcome the medias ling in regard to the motives of the Republicans. The immigrants will likely not understand the situation in truth.

Nothing difficult about it at all. she has explained it repeatedly.

Exactly—he was solidly behind her in the past—and subsequently took a lot of grief for it.

VERY well said Geologist!

Democrats are unified on their Message. And will defend their people to the death!

Our Sides wants to toss anyone and everyone at the first sign of trouble.

When Someone Brings up anything about Sarah being "Damaged".

All I say is "Hilary Clinton and Vince Foster"

The people have had opportunity to see the ugly, (mean) side of Hillary. I doubt Sarah has an ugly mean side. Sarah is well grounded and smart, and best of all a common sense CONSERVATIVE, an excellent speaker and loving mother, that loves Alaska (and America).

America is in the hands of power that disdains us and most all we stand for in life.

God help America to stand strong and free from oppression, for Jesus sake, Amen.
