Romney can't lead a more populist GOP
The Washington Examiner ^ | October 1, 2014 | Timothy P. Carney, Senior Political Columnist

Mitt Romney is a great person and a decent politician, but he also embodies the deepest problems in the Republican Party. He shouldn't run for president.

Republicans, if they want to control Congress or win the White House, need to become a Party of the People. Romney may be the worst possible man to take the GOP in that direction.

Romney’s most telling moment in 2012 was when he told a crowd of rich donors that the 47 percent of the country that “pay no income tax” are unwinnable for Republicans, because they “are dependent upon government,” and “I'll never convince them that they should take personal responsibility and care for their lives.”

Romney has downplayed the comment as some sort of clumsy way of handling a rambling question. But he campaigned like he believed it. Romney focused on the upper-middle-class white suburbs that Bush had generally won and McCain had generally lost. The fruit of this effort: he improved about 1 percentage point on McCain’s performance in key Ohio, Virginia, and Pennsylvania suburbs, while losing out on much of the blue-collar vote....

Putting Romney in a closet till after this current election would go a long way toward helping the GOP take the senate.

In fact, putting all presidential talk aside till after this election is advisable.

Gotta love these “if it ain’t MY perfect candidate” then I’ll vote for the Devil. No candidate with the “R” behind his or her name will be the preferred candidate for ALL Republican voters. But, we need an “R” in the White House and not a “D.” (And forget the “they’re the same” argument).

It is amazing how a storyline put together by numerous authors during a thousand year period ending 2 millenia ago could be the road map to events unfolding over the past 30-70 years. But when have we been able to take our eyes off those few square miles of the earth’s surface?

Your twisted version of theology sounds a lot like the Iranian 12er fantasy of bringing the mahdi to wash the world in blood.

Nothing I’ve ever seen in the bible suggests that its on us to force the end of the world. If anything, I think you’ll find that your master isn’t who you think he is.

To the headlines:Romney is a looser and couldn’t lead anything

He probably spells better than you do.

We have a Muslim in the White House letting all kinds of sick people into this country and this is what you have time for? Do you really hate Mormans that much?

I'd rather have a Morman than a Muslim

Progressive and populist are two entirely different things. Populist is the opposite of elitist and crony capitalist. Cruz and Palin lean populist but not progressive. Pelosi, Romney, and Rove are elitist and progressive.

Utah has been helping to elect Republican Presidents, or at least voting for them, as long as I can recall ( don’t understand why they dropped Goldwater!) That’s as much as I need to know. On the other hand, the white-shirted, polite missionaries who knock on so many doors around the country may be the face of Mormonism that kept many home in 2012( I heard it from one person, anyway).

Why did Romney help Obama over and over?

Have you and he apologized to the Palin family yet?

How about the MILLIONS of people impacted by
your Master’s imposition of gay marriage and ObamaCARE?

Actually I’ve heard it from a number of people. They refused to vote for a Mormon. I guess they think a Muslim is better.

Let’s face it: Mitt Romney was our “John Kerry” candidate..

Bumbling, loser, and didn’t put up much of a fight.

(I could mention another similarity: their location, but MA speaks for itself).

The various candidate bots show up and try to take over every thread related to the next election. They will be here in numbers. Some of them are insufferable, but you learn to ignore them, because you can’t debate with them.

They will flood threads with their candidate propaganda. “X is the only one who can win,” they cry as their candidate’s bandwagon crashes.

It is fun to watch, if you can get beyond their propaganda.

Progressive,populist; populist, progressive...

I just want a President who fears the Lord, is thankful for freedom and those who shed their blood to attain it; is honest, seeks wise counsel, and will uphold the Constitution of the United States.

The backstabber Romney is a lower than
a junkyard dog who attacks conservatives
through his surrogates.

Although Bishop Romney was running, he got a lower percentage of the Mormon vote than George W. Bush did, Romney’s highest percentage among groups was with Evangelical Christians (79%), the Catholic vote went for Obama again.

For a number of years, I would go out door-to door evangelizing in our suburban town as part of a team of 2 or 3. The acceptance of that means of evangelism/ inviting newcomers to church declined precipitously between 1975-1985; that probably coincided with greater activity of Jehovah Witness and Mormons coming east, doing the same thing. It became harder and harder to get people to engage on their door step or invite you in. Of course, that was also the era when delivery men (milk, bread, cleaners, etc—even Fuller Brush) disappeared from the street ( fewer June Cleavers at home during the day I guess).
