DES MOINES, Iowa — The first person to declare they are running for president will be in the metro Thursday night.
Republican Senator Ted Cruz is in Iowa meeting with voters just one week after he announced his candidacy for president.
Cruz made his first public appearance in the state that holds the first in the nation caucuses Wednesday in Sioux City. Cruz told the crowd at Morningside College that in order to have a bright future, the country has to look to the principles of the past.
He talked about restoring free enterprise, tax reform, and regulatory reform. To reform taxes, Cruz proposes abolishing the IRS and replacing it with a “flat tax.”
To reform the regulatory system, Cruz would target the president’s signature piece of legislation, the Affordable Care Act.
The “Real Clear Politics” average of the last four Iowa polls in the race for president has Cruz polling with 4.3-percent. That’s well behind eight other candidates who haven’t even declared.
Since announcing his candidacy, Cruz has seen a recent surge in support but admits he’s facing an uphill battle to win the Republican nomination.
“In any race that’s going to be as crowded as this one, the polls are going to be fickle. And so, there are going to be times when people are up and times when people are down. And so I don’t think we should put too much stock, even though we’re doing quite well in the polls right now, we shouldn’t put too much stock into it,” says Cruz.
Cruz will make stops in Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids during the day Thursday and is holding a Town Hall meeting in Des Moines at 7:15 p.m. It’s being held at the airport Holiday Inn on Fleur Drive.
Cruz should stream every single appearance he makes. The tech is easy.
Just saw Cruz in Cedar Falls. He gave a very impressive speech and answered some questions. I was surprised by the large turnout this early in the primary season but it was good to see.
I’ll bet he does.
I will never understand why Iowa of all places gets this kind of treatment.
I think the state that had the highest republican turnout in the previous national election should get the privilege of being first in the next election!

But I like Ted a lot and am early in the decision process like the rest of us.
I was at the Cedar Falls event today. It was very well attended.
He talked about a variety of topics, including the importance of grass roots activism.
Overall, it was a good event.
Lots of excitement in the room...crowd was spilled out into adjacent rooms...standing room only.
saw a wide demographic....old, young, femaie, male...including lots of millenials...which was refreshing to me.

I am guessing it was probably Utah in the last election.
I would prefer to see closed primaries first. Followed by the nomination. Followed by the general election. Followed by open primaries.
yep after checking it was Utah with 72.69% voting for Romney followed by Wyoming at 68.64%
imagine how different how nominees would be if we start off with Utah, Wyoming and Oklahoma
These would be the first ten primary states if the order were done by who voted the highest percentage republican in the last national race.
Utah, Wyoming, Oklahoma, West Virginia Arkansas, Kentucky, Kansas, Tennessee, North Dakota, South Dakota
I would be 1000 times more comfortable with THOSE 10 states picking our nominee.
But then how would we get someone electable, like Dole, McCain, Romney, or Jeb? Silly conservatives, don’t know how to win. Trust in Rove. And New Hampshire.
In all seriousness, I would love to see those 10 states being the deciders. But it won’t happen, because the Republican party establishment is an avowed enemy of the middle class, conservatism, and common sense (differing only in strategy and tactics, not goals, from the Democrats).
