True believers embrace Ted Cruz in Iowa campaign swing
The Dallas Morning News ^ | April 5, 2015 | Todd J. Gillman, Washington Bureau

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Like many Iowa Republicans, bus driver Bill Jodeit yearns for another Ronald Reagan, a leader to unite the party’s many factions, deliver victory and restore America’s vigor and place in the world.

And he may have found what he’s looking for in Ted Cruz.

“What he represents, and what Reagan represented, was the shining city on the hill, the best of America. Reagan bombed Libya — he scared our enemies. Now we’ve got a president that’s scared to scare our enemies,” said Jodeit, 49.

In week two of the Cruz presidential campaign, the 44-year-old Texas senator drew enthusiastic crowds of conservative activists across Iowa, which hosts the first 2016 nominating contest. They laughed and cheered at all the right spots — the call to padlock the IRS and send all those agents to patrol the Mexican border, the vow to repeal Obamacare.

They nodded as he painted himself as a latter-day Reagan, a favorite trope that reflects the most pragmatic of challenges: Cruz may be a darling of tea partiers and evangelicals, but he will need support from a whole lot of others to win the GOP nomination, let alone the presidency.

“There are a lot of folks from Washington who say, ‘Gosh, the way to win is we rush toward the mushy middle,’” Cruz said in Cedar Rapids.

He spoke of “eerily uncanny” parallels between Jimmy Carter, who gave way to Reagan, and Barack Obama, who, he hopes, gives way to him. Stagnation, weakness, feckless policies abroad, Cruz said, nudging audiences to view him as the latest savior of party and country since the 40th president.

“Washington despised Ronald Reagan. If you see a candidate who Washington embraces, run and hide,” said Cruz....

There are many tens of millions of us, Todd, and many more millions of common-sense "Reagan Democrats," union families, Christians & Jews, fiscal conservatives, unemployed & underemployed and other types of people who back Ted Cruz or are open to what he's saying.

Ted Cruz would be a wonderful POTUS but he must change his opinion on H1b workers. American workers first. This will be an important issue.

I don’t think Todd has looked in a mirror and understands what “True Believers” are.

Agreed! If he is to support American workers, he’s got to say no to the big IT companies and Chamber of Commerce. No H1B. That’d be a great stance: Eliminate H1B, reign in L1 and other visa workers that are undermining American workers.

Todd Gillmann is trying to infer that ONLY the religious Right is embracing Cruz, and then will go on to denigrate the religious right... this is the only way that they can smear Cruz so far. Pretty pathetic.

“True Believers” ... Jeez ... The media is already trying to cast Ted’s candidacy as some sort of “Jesus freak” thing. Ted’s already-savvy people need to be conscious of this. Number one priority, and stress it constantly: America needs to return to sanity. That bold statement, with all it encompasses, will win the day and then some.

Nice use of marxist phrases to describe a freedom lover. In reality, true believers are the marxist party members and elites who actually believe the BS they are spouting and want the results they are getting. Obama and his top people are true believers. Their followers, the low information voters and liberals who just like to feel good about themselves, but who aren’t really in favor of creating a slave state, they are what are known as useful idiots. The people who like Ted Cruz are just enemies to the true believers, and will be shot first.

Sen. Cruz wants 500X more H1B workers when we have so many Americans needing jobs. Having some sort of security would be comforting knowing that you were not training a H1B worker to take your job.

For high skilled, science, engineering, and mathematics jobs.

There's a shortage so how do we keep those jobs in the USA if we don't?

This has nothing to do with illegal immigration so please, if you feel the urge
to associate the two don't bother.

Not many people even know what H1B even means and can easily be lied to
that it's an immigration package. It's temporary employment for certain highly
educated individuals who pay taxes, not lawn care workers paid in cash which
is sent home out of our country.

Is that what you're Bitching about?

Sen. Cruz wants 500X more H1B workers

You lied, and are propagating disinformation. You watched the video, remember that.

What Cruz actually said was:
To increase the cap of (65,000) by 500% to (325,000)..

500X would be 32,000,000, That's 32 Million. Do you think your propaganda
is false here? Just a simple change of characterization makes a world of
difference.

500-PERCENT,, Five Hundred Percent! not 500-Times! You Walker/Paul-bots are
really a cult of sore ass losers and I'm sick of the whole lot of you.

Please feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but 325K is not even close
to your 32-million. That was no mistake on your part.

Remember Cruz is running for Pres. so give him the latitude he needs to win this...I have a feeling once he can do something about the borders and immigration crisis...he’s going to have a balance which is knowing ‘who’ is coming here.....H1B requires background checks.

I already determined that Cruz has to also attract the middle in this race......and that means he will need to show some degree of compromise to get the big stuff he’s going to go after once he’s in.

As for job security...there isn’t any such thing today and we all know that. So “comfort” as you mentioned isn’t going to be there regardless.

Exactly. What’s he supposed to say: no illegal OR legal immigration? That sounds xenophobic. Besides, we WANT to make a distinction between illegal and legal immigration.

You can argue about whether we need H1 visas in the abstract. In reality, it’s a political decision and one that is tied to illegal immigration at that.

I agree Sen. Cruz needs latitude on this point. Hell, I agree with him on this point: not that we need more H1 visas per se. I agree that we should go out of our way to make a distinction that our argument is in favor of the rule of law and is not anti-immigrant.

We are a nation of immigrants. I’m NOT anti-immigrant. I can live with picking and choosing educated legal immigrants as a counter to standing up against illegal immigration.

...."We WANT to make a distinction between illegal and legal immigration"....

Definitions matter...Interesting you used the word 'distinctions' for in my walk with God I have learned well HE is a God of 'distinctions'. Once I fully grasped this so many questionable things became very clear. It's important to know that distinctions MATTER.

I'm not about to get hung up on anything I might not agree with regarding Cruz as he runs his race to the Presidency..... I had already fully checked him out when he did his filibuster as he was so engaging then, so I know where he stands.

So if he moves more toward the center during this race I have no problem with it...he needs to win this and we need him to win this!

Besides I'll take a trade off of educated and civil HI visa immigrants over these!

His opinion is fine - it may not parrot what your mind tells you it should be, but to make it an issue is to cut off your manhood to try to become more manly - stir the pot enough and eventually the crap will end up floating to the top.
