Ben Carson touts a flat tax plan that even the poor would pay
McClatchy DC ^ | May 10, 2015 | William Douglas

Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson Sunday touted a flat tax plan that he says even the nation’s poor would pay if he’s elected.

Speaking on "Fox News Sunday," Carson said it’s "very condescending" to think that poor people can’t pay taxes at the same flat rate as wealthier Americans. Carson said he got the idea for his plan – he calls it a proportional tax – from tithing in the Bible.

Using a 10 percent rate as an example, Carson said "You make $10 billion a year, you pay $1 billion. You make $10 a year, you pay one dollar."

"Now, some people say it’s not fair because, you know, the poor people can’t afford to pay that dollar," Carson, a retired neurosurgeon told Fox News’ Chris Wallace. "That’s very condescending. You know, I grew up very poor. I experienced every economic level. And I can tell you poor people have pride, too. And they don’t want to be just taken care of."

Carson disagreed with calculations that Wallace quoted from the Tax Policy Center that indicated a flat tax would have to be in the 20 percent range in order for the federal government to raise as much revenue as it does now...

Anonymous sales tax only, same rate across the board. Only fair way.

"Great brain surgeon (or not) but that’s about the end of the line. Obviously clueless about the everyday world most of us live in."

That sort of statement, unaccompanied as it was by anything remotely resembling a logical argument, is your basic "ad hominem" attack.

Look it up...

Flat Tax with a Caveat.

Everyone gets a $5,000 Personal Deduction. Single Filer, the first $5,000 of Income is not Taxed. Family of Four, the first $20,000 of Income is not Taxed. That should cover the basic necessities of Life.

In the Interview, Wallace mentioned the EITC. You know, getting a Tax Refund for not Paying Taxes. Apparently, Wallace is a big Fan of that.

That's what my money and my time are going to.

I have an agenda. I want President Cruz, and I'm willing to spend money and time to make sure to help that cause.

I know who I want to vote for.

The current tax system is toooooooooo complicated. Many have suggested a flat rate tax equal to all, or a sales tax which would be similarly fair.

With a flat tax concept, YES THE POOR WOULD PAY. There is nothing wrong with this. If you start making exceptions and exemptions, then soon we’d be back to where we are.

I do not see this guy ever getting elected though. His biggest problem is obama. obama and those young blacks looting and burning in places like Baltimore have created a serious problem for blacks in general. I’m willing to bet many voters that watch all the violence on TV and know full well obama is the worst president ever will likely not want another black president. If this is true, in essence it would be racist, but it was brought on by the regime.

Actually, no one should pay income taxes. Sales taxes on new purchases and import tarrifs would be sufficient.

Sounds good to me. What i used to hate is paying sales tax on a used car when i was young.

I thought the tax was to cover the initial cost of raw materials.

Tell you the truth, I was willing to give a Carson a listen until I saw this thread just a little down the page:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/gop/3288356/posts?page=1

where Carson proposes hugely increasing ethanol subsidies and mandating 30% ethanol “gasoline.”

That’s Rand Paul-territory Bat-guano-crazy.

Don't most cities have a flat tax already? For example in Philadelphia the wage tax is:
3.92% (Resident)
3.4915% (Non-Resident)

Why not just make the 1% pay it all, in fact , just take all their money. Let’s just outlaw wealth. Where do some of you FReepers even come from?

That half the population wasn't going to vote for him anyway...

So what you're saying is that the only way for the GOP to win is to get over 95% of the voters who could possibly vote for them? They're doomed.

Sales taxes on new purchases and import tarrifs would be sufficient.

Advocating raising taxes on over half the population is not a way to win.
