JOHNSTON, Iowa – Sen. Ted Cruz says whether or not South Carolina removes the Confederate flag from a state house memorial is an issue for the state to decide and that he sees “both sides” of the debate.

In an interview with The Washington Post on Saturday, Cruz (R-Tex.) said that he understands why people equate the flag with both racial oppression and historical traditions.

“I understand the passions that this debate evokes on both sides,” the GOP presidential hopeful said. “Both those who see a history of racial oppression and a history of slavery, which is the original sin of our nation, and we fought a bloody civil war to expunge that sin.”

He added: “But I also understand those who want to remember the sacrifices of their ancestors and the traditions of their states, not the racial oppression, but the historical traditions, and I think often this issue is used as a wedge to try to divide people.”

Former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. the 2012 Republican presidential nominee, said Saturday that the flag should be taken down....

Can I ask a stupid question? why are we having this debate again? Why is it happening right after the church shooting in South Carolina? Are the liberals going Alinsky on us, not letting a crisis go to waste, and dredging up this Confederate flag issue due to the shooting and charges of racism and all that???

It is black racists and their liberal enablers (that includes Obama) who are trying to turn this horrific tragedy to their advantage. The narrative is more important than the answers.

Are all of this homicidial maniacs creepy near- zombies because of prescribed mind-altering meds?

Exactly! This falls under the part of the Constitution that gives all things to the individual States that are not enumerated in that document. And, State’s flags are not enumerated in the Constitution, my Constitution that I read, at least.

I’m glad to see Ted Cruz knows when to just STFU. Unlike Willard.

Of course they are...it shouldn't surprise you. They've been waiting for an opportunity to take this up again.

That’s precisely what happened.

A SC state congressman or delegate brought it up.

These people sicken me.

Cruz very neatly side- stepped the issue by playing both sides of the question. I differ with him , as to his assertion that for some it is a “tradition” issue. He FAILS to point out that STATE’S RIGHTS WERE the ISSUE when the war started and that LINCOLN drew attention to the slave issue as a means of weakening the south after the war was going the way of the south. SLAVERY WAS NOT the reason for the WAR of NORTHERN AGGRESSION...

A polished politician knows how to dodge the truth. That’s strike two for me.

I will say this much: The people of South Carolina need to take more precautions to keep that flag from sneaking down the flag pole at night and shooting people.

Remember, Obama is not 100% black and has very little in common with the typical black American.

1850 Census records from Kentucky show that one of Obama’s slave-owning great-great-great-great grandfathers, George Washington Overall, owned a 15-year-old girl and a 25-year-old man.

The same records show that one of Obama’s great-great-great-great-great-grandmothers, Mary Duvall, also owned two black slaves.

Also, Andrew Shields was Michelle Obama’s great-great-great-great-great-great-grandfather and his family was slave owners.

Shhhh, don't tell the rebel leadership then because they were all under the misconception that they seceded to protect their institution of slavery.

Did the issue of slavery have anything at all to do with the Civil War?

no,it was a side note to justify northern aggression pure and simple
Southern freed slaves more often than not stayed on the very plantations that held them
