Poll: Donald Trump leads GOP nationally, but Ben Carson gains

Washington (CNN)Donald Trump is expanding his strong lead over the other GOP presidential candidates nationally, according to a new poll, but Ben Carson is also posting a big jump in support.

In the first national Monmouth University poll out since the first Republican presidential debate, released Thursday, the real estate mogul is showing a commanding lead at 30% support. That's up 4 points from a poll taken just before the debate last month, but within the poll's margin of error.

It's also a new high for Trump, narrowly topping the 28% support he registered in a Quinnipiac poll late last month.

But Carson, a neurosurgeon, posted the biggest gain in support since August, jumping 13 points to second place. He is holding down 18% support now among Republicans. That continues a trend of recent polls that show him moving up the list.

It's also Carson's highest recorded number in a national poll, topping a 13% mark in a Fox news poll this spring.

Trump's lead also evaporates when the field is narrowed to just him and Carson. Asked about a head-to-head match-up between those two, Republican voters picked Carson over Trump, 55% to 36%.

Former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush fell out of second place, dropping from 12% support in August to 8% now, though that fall is within the margin of error. That tied him for third place with Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.

People want new blood. Everyone knows that the beltway clique is what got us into this mess, except the elitists themselves.

Now...if only we could cross Trump’s impressive business background with Carson’s humble and self deprecating personality-—I think we would have the perfect candidate.

How many times has Donald Trump gone bankrupt.

So Trump picks up points, hits a new high, and this is portrayed as bad news for Trump. I'd say it's worse news for 15 other candidates.

Didn’t Carson say he wants Illegals to be able to become citizens? How is that different than Jebba the Hutt and Rubio?

Sorry Doc. You lost me on that position.

Forbes site says Donald Trump Corporation has gone bankrupt 4 times.

You are correct....Corporations. A corporation is a separate entity which is created to protect the owner(s) from personal liability. A person could own 30 corporations, file bankruptcy for 10 of them, and still do very well with the other 20. Therefore, Donald Trump (the man) has never gone bankrupt.

If you want to state that four of his corporations have, then I'd agree with you.

Yes. I saw postings about him coming out for amnesty yesterday. Hasn't seen much light yet though. I'd guess if things came to a head it might hit his poll numbers a bit.

How can Trump possibly win with this kind of idiocy?

Trump’s plan to defeat ISIS:

“They have great money because they have oil. Every place where they have oil I would knock the hell out of them. I would knock out the source of their wealth, the primary sources of their wealth, which is oil. And in order to do that, you would have to put boots on the ground. I would knock the hell out of them but I’d put a ring around it and I’d take the oil for our country.”

Overall I like Ben Carson, but he really needs to address illegal immigration on his Issues page of his website. I suspect what he puts together will not be as bad as some fear and will be well-thought-out, at any rate.

Trump’s high negatives will be his undoing, especially as the media infatuation with him wanes. Cruz, Carson and others in the more conservative wing of the GOP will have an opportunity to shine as Trump fades and Bush continues to be a Really Bad Idea on the part of the GOPe.

If you really want to see racism on parade, wait until Carson gets the lead or close to it. First the Dems will try to take him out with alleged affairs ala Herman Cain and that they will try all sorts of ad hominems, claim that he’s “not really black”, etc., like they did with Clarence Thomas.

Judging at how nasty the Left used sexist language to attack Sarah Palin, Dr. Carson should be fully prepared for this.

“I’d take the oil for our country.”

That was the shocking thing to me about the Iraq War. How the heck did we liberate a country, suffer hundreds of deaths in the process, and not make an arrangement to keep, say, 10% of the oil for a set number of years as a reward for our sacrifice? Stupid Bushes.

True but zero Democrats are going to cross over for Cruz.
Jeb may get a lot unless the Dems have competitive primaries.

It’s his one chance to win...Op Chaos 2016.
