GOP 2016 hopefuls split over Trump's Muslim controversy

Greenville, South Carolina (CNN)—Republican presidential hopefuls were split Friday amid the fallout from Donald Trump not taking issue with a man who, during a campaign event, called President Barack Obama a Muslim and said Muslims are "a problem in this country."

Rick Santorum and Ted Cruz refused to criticize Trump or say whether they believe Obama is a Christian, instead slamming reporters for asking about the incident. Jindal said it wasn't a candidate's "role" to correct a questioner -- but also said he would have pointed out the U.S.'s anti-discrimination values.

And Chris Christie, Lindsey Graham and Jeb Bush emphatically said they believe Obama was born in the U.S. and criticized Trump for not standing up to the questioner.

"Look, ladies and gentlemen I'm not playing this ... game that you want to play," a visibly aggravated Santorum said at Heritage Action's presidential forum in Greenville, South Carolina. "The President can defend himself. He doesn't need Rick Santorum to defend him. He's got you doing that very, very well. So cut it out."(continued)

Okay, conspiracy hat on:

This is the media’s way of keeping Trump on top for better ratings. They have GOT to know this is is only helping, not hurting his campaign.

Conspiracy hat off.

With that said, let’s come up with a new verb: in the 80s it was called “borking”. This new term should be named “palinizing”

Trump released a statement to The Washington Post defending his comments.

“The media wants to make this issue about Obama,” he told the Post. “The bigger issue is that Obama is waging a war against Christians in this country. Their religious liberty is at stake.”

And if Trump had corrected the questioner he would've been criticized for denying the questioner his free speech rights.

One prevailing opinion is it was a "gotcha" and the power brokers were ready to pounce with fake outrage however Trump answered. How come the person who asked the question hasn't been identified and interviewed?

The more I think of it, the more I think the questioner was a plant by the Trump campaign. They know how to play the media like a harp. Strummmmmmmmmmm.....

In his book “Dreams of My Father” Obama proclaimed that in conflicts he would stand with Islam. He has stated that the greatest sound was the Muslim call to prayer. His #1 assistant Jarret was born in Iran and is Muslim. He celebrates Ramadan with Muslim clerics (he never celebrated Christmas in the WH with Christian clerics). He spent his early years being taught in an Indonesian school that was anti Semitic. Throughout his presidency he has been favorable to Iran and Islamists. Has done nothing to stop or slow down the mass executions of Christians by Muslims and a prayer breakfast proclaimed that Christians were to blame for the current problems because of the crusades.Mr. Trump was correct when not correcting the questioner. Obama's heart is with the Muslims and certainly not with Christianity.

Christie, Graham and Jeb Bush emphatically said they believe Obama
was born in the US and criticized Trump for not refuting the questioner.

that I am not now, nor have I ever been, a Muslim."

Since when did this become the responsibility of Trump or any candidate for that matter? Has obama himself ever stated that he is not a muslim?

Even during his interview with George Stephanopolous, where he mentioned his "muslim faith" and George fell all over himself to correct obama by saying "your christian faith", obama never affirmed the correction.

If obama himself never stated that he is not a muslim, why does the onus fall onto everyone else defend the notion that he is not a muslim?

Rick Santorum’s response was brilliant because he makes the point everyone should be making. The First Amendment gives everyone the right to say what they believe. I got so angry at Mark Levin last night when he called the gentleman who asked the question in New Hampshire a “kook”. How disgusting and Fascist based was that characterization? Furthermore, Levin has used the same approach on his callers on the issue. He has run away from the issue of Obummer being a Muslim and not a natural born citizen time and time again. His response essentially is one that precedes Hillary’s use of the term “What difference does it make.” His ridiculous position is that no one is going to do anything about it so he was not going to address the matter either. Now mind you, he claims to be a defender of the Constitution and he runs away from the natural born citizen issue. Overall, I like Levin, but I am sorry to say time will prove him wrong and that he failed to try and make a difference when it would have truly mattered. It is not that you win all the time, but that you do what is right and try to make a difference. Now, Levin is rightfully incensed over McConnell and Boehner not taking a stand on abortion and Iran even if they lose the fight with Obummer. How do you reconcile Levin’s Muslim/BC surrender with his desire to win, lose, or draw on other issues. I believe the media and politcians have been gagged on the critical Obummer issues. The BC/U.S. born issues are Obummer’s fatal flaw and no one in a position of authority or responsibility has the fire in the belly to fight. Joe Arpaio was no coward. He refused to run away from the issue when his people brought it up. Just because he has no where to go with his criminal case doesn’t negate the results. That makes Joe a hero in my book because he tried. And his case is still there for possible future prosecution when Trump gets in. In any event, history will never be kind to cowards.

In foreign policy as well, Mr. Obama would bring to the White House an important experience that most other candidates lack: he has actually lived abroad. He spent four years as a child in Indonesia and attended schools in the Indonesian language, which he still speaks.

“I was a little Jakarta street kid,” he said in a wide-ranging interview in his office (excerpts are on my blog, www.nytimes.com/ontheground). He once got in trouble for making faces during Koran study classes in his elementary school, but a president is less likely to stereotype Muslims as fanatics — and more likely to be aware of their nationalism — if he once studied the Koran with them.

Mr. Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The “opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer” are:
Allahu Ackbar,
Allahu Ackbar
And Obama spontaneously sang it to a New York Times reporter as if he was bragging about it.
We all at FR know that Levin is not a ‘kook’ but to the media and the lefty’s, he is a kook. Were he to engage in in this discussion he’d remove all doubt in the minds of the big media companies which, from their largesse, is how he earns his living - TV, Radio, publishing. I doubt he truly believes its ‘kookism’ but he knows what the result would be for him personally. He’d be useless and broke if he could no longer participate at all.
Trump’s Twitter page has a link to a post debate poll showing he gained several points. Fiarina gained some too, and Carson tanked. I’d post the link but you would enjoy an interlude on Trump’s Twitter site more. It’s a lot of fun.
Here’s the link to the Twitter profile itself:
