I still remember that debate. Everyone who heard it on the radio said NIXON won hands down!

Those who saw it on TV said Kennedy won because Nixon looked “shifty”.

Since that time a Presidential candidate has to be very “photogenic”. Substance be d*mned. Does he look Presidenital?

I confess ... I've never listened nor watched it before ...

and I am amazed at how little has changed.

This could be a present day debate ... except I believe in 1960 ... people (and the media) were really trying to act (if not be .. ) intelligent

Thanks, I've seen it before, but I'll watch it at home tonight or this weekend.

Since I was only 5yo at the time, I might need to give this a listen just to get a sense of history. Of course, I’ve seen snippets of the TV broadcast but never the entire thing.

Thank you both

I've been wondering ... since I posted it, if anyone had seen it, and if they had ... did they care ...

Exactly. And since then we've had exactly ONE president who was any good (Reagan) and that's only because he was photogenic and charismatic.

Of course the 1964 election didn't actually follow the photogenic theme. In that one there were two ugly guys and the press assured us that one wouldn't get America into a war in Vietnam (even though the escalation had already begun) and that one would start World War III.

I'm not sure I've seen the whole thing, but I've seen segments of it and I believe I've heard the audio of all of it.

Until the advent of color TV, American men wore white shirts with button-down collars with a suit PERIOD (look at the early episodes of Mad Men). Nixon was dressed EXACTLY the same way that millions of American businessmen watching it on TV were dressed, but few at the time recognized the real impact of television, especially color.
