When the applause dies for Jeb Bush (In desperation, using Terri Schiavo campaign ad)
The Miami Herald ^ | February 5, 2016 | Carl Hiaasen

"Please clap," Jeb Bush wryly told a subdued crowd in New Hampshire last week, a moment that epitomizes his problem.

The pundits call it lack of traction. Among too many voters it's lack of interest.

If Jeb bombs in New Hampshire, he's done. Even if he doesn't quit the race, it's over.

A year ago this scenario was unimaginable. He had more money, more brains, more connections and more governing experience than any other Republican wanting to be president. Like many people, I thought his nomination would be a slam dunk.

The gaseous rise of Donald Trump upended everything, but not only for Jeb. The other candidates had to scramble, too. Some did a better job.

Sure, Iowa is a silly place to start a presidential campaign. Its demographics are freakishly white, and the GOP electorate is anomalously dominated by evangelical Christians.

Still, Jeb spent plenty of time and money there, and wound up with only 2.8 percent of the vote. That's miserably weak, and there's no positive spin.

What's happening? The answer is, for better or worse: Not much.

Jeb hasn't made any huge, embarrassing blunders on the campaign trail. He's not obnoxious or unlikable. True, he's not an electrifying personality, but in most election cycles that wouldn't disqualify him.

Obviously, he misjudged the depth of the anger and division within his own party. He isn't the only candidate to get caught off guard.

But he is the only Bush on the ballot, and that's probably hurt him more than it has helped. Jeb isn't the one who invaded Iraq and basically exploded the Mideast. He isn't the one who jacked up the deficit with war spending, then left the U.S. economy teetering on a cliff....

Does Jeb actually not remember that he murdered Terri Schiavo?

The gaseous rise of Donald Trump ...

That's right up there with calling Cruz "oily".

Another subtle reminder that it is Conservatives versus the Uniparty this time around.

When isn’t it? Hope Yertl can console Rand about that having to drop out of the race thing.

We have to link to the article to get to the Teri Schiavo part. It's shocking and delusional. He uses his treatment of Teri Schiavo as a reason to vote for him? Doesn't he know that is the reason so many of us pro-life folks despise him?

This and bringing his mom out on a walker in the snow? Yeah, I'd trust this guy with weapons of mass destruction.

Jeb, just GO AWAY

Such is Jeb's desperation that he has a new campaign commercial using a photo of Terri Schiavo. She was the BRAIN-DEAD woman whose husband and parents were locked in a legal fight over the continuation of LIFE-SUPPORT procedures.

As governor, Jeb inserted himself into the case, ultimately involving his president brother and Congress in the effort to keep a feeding tube in Schiavo, who'd been COMATOSE for 13 years.

Lie after lie after lie. Ultimately, Jeb chickened out, and refused to save Terri from her murderers.

Jeb is not oily, but he is unctuous.

It is his rino policies. The base do not want another democrat with an R in front of his name and he can not even pretend in the primaries to be conservative like his father did.

The only plus on Jeb's side is he has been honest about where he stands unlike others in the race. We just do not want another rino.

It’s become a visceral thing on both sides. Seeing and listening to Bush, it he evokes nothing in me. If hard pressed I’d say, “pity” or maybe boredom.

Trump releases the endorphins. Cruz did for me too, when he filibustered, but now he evokes something different in me.

I think the science of politics has come to the point that we are manipulated subliminally.

Bush is out no matter how NH turns out, but I believe he’ll bring in 4 % and call that momentum from Iowa.

I think big winner in NH, next to Trump, will be Fiorina.

When Jebby was bashing Trump during the last debate about the ‘elderly’ woman and eminent domain, I was so hoping Trump would say...how can you judge me after what you allowed to happen to a ‘defenseless’ young woman. A defenseless young woman who had parents that wanted to take care of her, and YOU, Jeb Bush, REFUSED to save their daughter!

I think the science of politics has come to the point that we are manipulated subliminally.

I have little doubt. All the buzzwords used to describe certain candidates pop up suddenly and universally, like the terms 'high powered assault weapon', "high capacity clip" [magazine], and 'cop killer bullet' did arguing over the RKBA.

When the pejoratives all appear synchronously and the talking points are identical, there is a sign that that assault just might be organized.

This writer is insulting on so many levels ( towards Trump especially) I don’t know where to begin...

Suffice to say...........Jeb’s convenient memory lapse cannot whitewash his direct and murderous act in condemning Terri to death.

I will always remember how her parents fought to keep her alive.....to take her home with them.....
...anyone with a shred of decency should have wanted to be on the side of the angels.....AND JEB WASN’T!

If I remember correctly, the parents weren’t even allowed to being a vase of flowers into the room because Jeb/ authorities were afraid they would use the water for Terri’s thirst!!!!!
Yes, they wouldn’t even let her have water!
Can you imagine living in America and watching your daughter die of thirst!

Remember, too, that video media is all about images. Bad lighting angle, bad camera angles, careful selection of still images for the 'right' expression or posture to try to convey anything from stalwart trustworthiness to villainous creepiness is something studied in communication arts curricula. Right along with making crowds look more dense, more scattered, or virtually nonexistent using camera angles and wide versus narrow fields.

Similarly, the appearance of the crowd as portrayed will have an effect on the viewer. Split screen with Candidate B showing angry crowd on one side, image of candidate lit form above or below on the other (the old camp out evil flashlight face trick), and a candidate can be made to look evil. Low angle light which makes them shine can be used to make them look nervous, good lighting can make them look anywhere form saintly to superhuman.

All the tricks used to divide now will be used later against many people's candidate of choice.

Even follow up stories and lead ins can set the tone, with murder and mayhem for the lead, sob story follow up giving one mood around the candidate, and with a 'good news' story and a feelgood puff piece about puppies around the candidate setting an entirely different tone.

From Hollywood to the six o'clock news, to the sitcom laugh track, the whole trip is manipulating your emotions, whether you know it or not.

He was cowed by a local judge.

And he wants us in another ground war in the mideast. And he wants to do nation building afterwards.

And he wants our daughters drafted despite the research showing much lower combat effectiveness.

And he’s the 3rd coming of members from the same family. The Bush royal family?

He is so wrong for America. Selling a crap sandwich and surprised that Americans don’t want to buy.

It is odd that the other candidates never mention this as a reason so many conservatives would never even regard Jeb as "the lesser of two evils". (I still know what "lesser evil" is, all evil will rise if given an opportunity). They have to know from all the surveying that's done how so many conservatives feel.

Perhaps it's better this way, always there, reminding us that how we feel is a huge part of choosing a candidate.
