The assumption for months was that everything would fall into place. That there was no need to really dig in, that the outcome was obvious. And then, too late, it became clear that this optimism was unfounded. Or maybe not too late, but late enough in the process to mean that folks would have to scramble. And now everything is up in the air.
The paragraph above describes the Republican establishments attitude about Donald Trumps candidacy, obviously. But it also describes Trumps push for the nomination itself.
From the moment he stepped onto that escalator on Trump Tower until about a month ago, Trumps assumption was that he could power his way to the nomination through sheer force of will. That the scene when he strolled through the Iowa State Fair, pulling people into a tight cluster around him as he moved through the crowd, would work at an electoral level as well. And, despite the skepticism of the establishment (and myself), it nearly did. With remarkably little effort beyond bopping around the country in his private jet, Trump vaulted into the lead and stayed there.
But that strategy has hit its limit, thanks mostly to Ted Cruzs dogged campaign efforts....

///He has won virtually every primary where everyone actually voted.
And this is proof the establishment backs Cruz? And what if it does? Trump has hit his ceiling. He is trying to learn how to tame it down to try to persuade all those he has trashed and repelled.
The Uniparty Establishment supports ted on their terms, not on ted’s terms.
The Uniparty Establishment has ‘hand’ - in Seinfeld jargon — over ted.
The “Grandpa Munster” and “Tail-gunner Joe McCarthy” memes weren’t working for you folks?
100 percent voter win only happens in dictatorships.
Colorado has cancelled its election. Sad.
Trump is supported by some Americans. He is not building his base. He thought all he had to do was have rallies with the content being I am wonderful, I am winning the polls, Cruz is a liar, Rubio is little, Carson is a psychopath and child molester, Kelly is not fair, Michelle Fields is a liar, Heidi Cruz is ugly, and multiple positions on all policy matters including promoting the spread of nuclear weapons and willingness to nuke Europe.
Now he has been in hiding trying to learn how to stay off twitter and learn some basic policy issues. Too little too late.
Since you are resorting to name calling...I will say I’m not half as stupid as you are jacka$$...
But Cruz did ask and got money from Trump, as did a lot of republicans.
Guess you haven’t read a single exit poll, right? Trump has been supported in the vast majority of actual ELECTIONS (vs. tiny caucuses, where St. Ted does better) by those REPUBLICANS listing themselves as “conservative,” “very conservative,” and “evangelical.”
But it helps to be able to read.
It’s pretty clear from last week that the Trump campaign completely wrote of CO, where they had little chance anyway with another of the stacked, insider pseudo-caucus/conventions (vs a real vote) and instead decided to go after the delegate rich states of NY, CA, IN, WV and PA.
But enjoy your Rocky Mountain High. Maybe it’s the weed that has people missing the fact that
CRUZ. WILL. NEVER. BE. THE. REPUBLICAN. NOMINEE.
Speaking of reading, go read about the number of delegates Cruz is amassing in Louisiana, Colorado, Washington State, Arizona....
You’ve completely missed my point. Why would any principled person give their money to people that oppose them ideologically? Well, maybe because that person doesn’t really oppose them ideologically...it is just simple logic. Trump has been a liberal for 97.1% of his life.
Is it difficult for you tRumpbots to drive with your heads up your tRumps?
Ted has given tons of money to the liberals with his support of unfair trade deals and is working on giving billions more to liberals and phoney conservatives with his support of TPP...Conservatives do not support unfair trade deals that benefit the international globalist rich and destroy the working middle class of America...
The Constitution is not all about survival of the fittest Americans nor the rights of foreign invaders with Cruz's support of so called immigration reform...
Some of you guys hear the word Constitution drip from Cruz's lips and can't see anything else...The rest of you I suspect are making your living off the cheap junk and cheap and illegal labor that Cruz's unfair trade deals provide...
...curious that nobody is responding to your comment.
It reminds me of a time when I was dating a particular woman. I would not see her for what she really was, until she took me for everything. I was in love...
You might want to sit down: President Reagan was all for TPP.
No it doesn't...The only one beating Hillary in the polls is Kasich...
Trump only does well with voters, Cruz does best with party hacks.
So I’m a party hack? And Cruz’s other supporters on FR are party hacks?
Yep. Seems like every day is a noob day. Lol
God knows who will win, but we get the leadership we deserve. Screaming at one another won’t change that.
2000 was bad, but at least then it seemed that there was a difference between the parties. Today’s question is how do we take them all out.
