For Cruz, since New Hampshire, it’s been about keep Trump from winning.

Nope. No second ballot. Trump wins 1st ballot or walks in with 1,237+. Ted can try again in four years after he learns that actually voting is important.

Sort of like the super bowl team quitting in the third quarter only behind by ten points(re: for Cruz to leave the race)

That's not a good analogy, not at all. In football and baseball and basket ball for that matter a team that's way behind can still earn enough points to win, according to the rules. Cruz can no longer get enough delegates to win. He should get out now, and hope he can salvage his career by working with President Trump to turn things around in the US Senate.

When that candidate is Ted Cruz they do. The GOPe has made him some back door deal in exchange for stopping Trump.

Cruz is just another political insider playing Washington games...

And the powers that be wonder why Trump keeps winning.

Trump will clean sweep next week as well and Cruz will get afewmore 3rd place losses.

It is beyond insane at this point for anyone with a working cerebral cortex to believe the party is going to allow the nomination to wind up in the hands of someone who’s sole win east of the Mississippi was Maine and is getting last place finishes during the home stretch.

Just a thought. Maybe at the convention since Kasich name can’t appear on the ballot because of the 40b rule, his delegates automatically goes to Trump on the first ballot

Oh, how did I know that you’d be chiming in with more inanity.

how does third place feel?

Soft of like the super bowl team quitting in the third qtr only behind by 10 points...

I don’t think you should use a football game analogy here...first of all, the end of a football game is not determined by a team reaching a set number of points, but by the winner having the plurality of points; exactly the opposite of this nonsensical and destructive nomination threshold...

you’re arguing for a scenario in which the leader had not reached a set threshold, say, 35 point margin, so at the end the refs got together and proclaimed ‘ok, we’re back to square one, let’s flip a coin and start all over...’

one would think we all would agree this is a foolish method to determine a competitive event...but, apparently not...

-- Candidates don't stay in just to block the front runner and force a convention fight, which weakens the Party. --

In this case, Cruz --is-- the party (or stand-in or surrogate for the party), he's the candidate that represents the least risk to upsetting the status quo applecart. The party would prefer to be weakened over allowing Trump to get the nomination. If Trump gets the nomination, I expect some factions within the party will work to sabotage Trump in the general election.

A true conservative wouldn’t have spent his entire career as a government lawyer.

The Bushes are trying to get Gen. Mattis to run 3rd party. Like Romney they would prefer Hillary in the WH to Trump.

Cruz got 44% in his home state.

Trump got 60%.

Trump won every county but one in FL. Cruz didn’t win a single county in battleground OH, VA and FL. There is only one viable candidate here and it is Donald J. Trump.

"In many cases, I probably identify more as Democrat," Trump told CNN's Wolf Blitzer in a 2004 interview.

Yep. Very conservative.

Poor analogy, popman. And an incorrect premise to boot.

A couple points. Rule 40(b) can be amended before the convention, and almost certainly will be unless Trump gets well over 1237 and the party capitulates.

As for how the delegates vote on the first ballot, that is controlled by a combination of state law and party rules, with the general principle being that bound delegates have to cast first ballot for the person they are bound to, even if that person isn't even running anymore, and even if that person can't possibly get a majority.

After that, nothing is automatic!

“We finally have a true conservative to vote for, and Republicans go for a carnival barker. tRump never even mentions things like—reducing the size of government, a balanced budget amendment, federalism and the tenth amendment, liberty, the constitution, free markets, traditional marriage and the family, or repudiating his liberal past. Why does he spend more time making personal attacks than explaining policy details?”

Sorry, Grumpa, but you’re just as wrong as wrong can be. No, actually, I’m not “sorry”, but you certainly are. During the past nine months, Trump has shown, by word and deed, that he is every bit a “conservative” as Felito and more so than every other RINO candidate we’ve seen prance around on the political stage. He has reshaped the direction of the race in true “conservative” directions in ways that are too numerous to mention. His humerous speeches, many interviews, and published position papers make this clear as a bell. If you and the other Cruzers can’t see what is happening right before your eyes, then, at this point, it must only be due to willful blindness, which is inexcusable given the desperate situation this country is in right now. Fer Chrissakes, you and all of the Cruzers need to take the scales from your eyes, wake up and smell the coffee, jump in our foxhole, get on the Trump Train, and fight the good fight!

I think Trump will get about 1215. He will get enough unbound delegates to put him over.
