U.S. Syphilis Rates Climbs for Second Consecutive Year with Massive Surge Among Homosexual Men
MMWR, CDC ^ | 11.21.03

Posted on 11/24/2003 7:50:56 PM PST by Coleus

The syphilis rate in the United States rose in 2002 for the second consecutive year, following a decade-long decline that led to an all-time low in 2000, according to new data released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The overall increase occurred despite continued declines in syphilis among African Americans and women. The increase is due to large increases in reported syphilis cases among men, particularly "gay and bisexual men" according to a report from the Centers for the Disease Control (CDC).

The data, published in the November 21 issue of CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), indicate that between 2001 and 2002, the overall rate of syphilis increased 9.1 percent, from 2.2 cases to 2.4 cases per 100,000 population - the highest rate since 1999. The total number of reported cases increased 12.4 percent, from 6,103 to 6,862 cases. However, since some syphilis cases go undiagnosed, the actual number of infections is likely higher.

Syphilis cases among men increased 27.4 percent between 2001 and 2002 (from 4,134 to 5,267 cases). CDC does not collect syphilis data by sexual orientation; however, study authors estimate that more than 40 percent of all syphilis cases reported in 2002 occurred among gay and bisexual men, accounting for much of the reported overall increase in the disease.

Recent research has highlighted increases in unprotected sex among some groups of men who have sex with men (MSM), as well as high rates of HIV co-infection among men diagnosed with syphilis (averaging about 50 percent). These findings, plus HIV surveillance data from a recent CDC 25-state study showing a 17.7 percent increase in HIV diagnoses among men who have sex with men between 1999 and 2002, have raised concerns about a resurgence of HIV in this population.

And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompence of their error which was meet.

Agreed.

Bush is responsible for this epidemic! Just Like Reagan was for AIDS! Why are "they" not spending money to make it easier for "Gays" to have group sex parties? These right wingers are "killing" "gays" for their "lifestyles".

Ughh- enough of this stuff. Sad.

...more than 40 percent of all syphilis cases reported in 2002 occurred among gay and bisexual men...

Well, can't say as this makes me sad.

Like my ole Granny used to tell me: "Son, you lie down with dogs, you get up with fleas."

No compassion here, I guess.

Sorry.

Now HOW could there be a connection between syphillis or aids and homosexuals. Can't be, must be the republicans or the smokers or someone elses fault altogether. Maybe the moon is in the wrong phase BUT then again maybe God is just going to handle the problem a little differently than he did Sodom and Gommorah. You can bet one thing...HE IS GOING TO HANDLE IT.

"CDC does not collect syphilis data by sexual orientation."

Political correctness maybe?

Don't be sorry ! Utterly predictable. I remember a few years ago reading of a judge who forbade the traditional isolation hospital treatment for a TB patient (who was HIV positive) because it was discriminatory ! I believe TB rates are rising too.

Maybe they should, then the data might be more useful.

TB is definately on the upswing in this country. Worse, alot of it is resistent to medicines. In NE active TB cases are not treated if the individual is not compliant with taking the meds. When it spreads, and it will- it is better to have a case of traditional TB to treat then the resistant kind. Resistance generally bred by someone who fails to takes meds, or takes them halfway- usually for about a year-. The resistant TB is anywhere from much more difficult to treat, to not treatable.

I think He will handle all of it. Homosexuality smells of death. Two men and Two women will never create life without the "NEED" of what is proper....a male sperm and a female egg. Left to homosexuals the human race would become extinct. It smells of death because it is death. Life springs from the loins of a man and the belly of a woman, together. Do all the medical crap you want it still speaks of death. Live how ever you want, justify whatever you want, do what ever you want, lets just hope you can live with the eventual consequences. WHAT EVER they may be.

CDC does not collect syphilis data by sexual orientation;

What you said. They are incompetent if they are intentionally ommitting critical data that can help them identify potential trending.

Our tax dollars at work....
