He may not have been the first to think of it, of course, but Kim Stanley Robinson had some nomadic tribes of singles roving about in Blue Mars, the last book in his Mars Trilogy (Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars).

It's a symptom of a vital need for new marriage law. Enslave-the-father is not a solution, it's a deterrent.

Puh-leeze. Declining to give someone a government subsidy is not "denigrating". Colson sounds like a bodily-secretions "artist" who whines about his "rights" being violated by NEA cutback.

Now, first let me say that it's important for Christians, when examining this trend, to avoid pointing fingers or acting as if singles are somehow inferior to married people.

Especially considering the divorce rate.

It's hard to grow up in such a society, frankly. Even more, stable marriage is the foundation of society. There's room for singles and nonconformists on the fringes of society, but when such people come to make up the majority of society, then the country is in serious trouble.

"That means that the U.S.'s 86 million single adults could soon define the new majority "

People notice different things and have different perspectives on articles which is why I like FR.

The item that got my attention is that if this is true and assuming these adult singles are living by themselves, it explains the growth and demand in housing.

I will have to think about that singles tribe concept.

Whew! It's quite a relief to see that Colson is still a dunce.

Why marry when you can get the goodies without the commitment?

Bump .... interesting ....been burned but still going to do it again if I find the right one.

Have kids ... they are going to be the ones that pick your retirement home ... or would you prefer the government to do that for you ?

The reality is that marriage has gotten to be a bad deal for men. That's why so many men are no longer willing to commit to marriage. I know I'm not!

Wow, there are some really sorry posters on this thread. Has no one been successful at love here?

Tuesday we celebrated our 25th anniversary. Our three kids are too young to throw us a party, so we had our champagne and crab legs at home. The kids are turning out great, even the two teenagers. They've added so much to our joy. We've been so blessed, and I can't remember when either of us stayed angry with the other for a whole day. It's no secret my husband adores us. When he's had a hard day he loves to come home where everyone races to the door to greet him, and where he could "relax in the bosom of his family." As for me, I'd never even be tempted to look elsewhere. Why would I?

I have a friend, who also has a successful, long term marriage. Her grandmother told her on her wedding day to give 75% of the effort required to keep her marriage happy. She does, and somehow her husband seems to want to do the same.

Marriage isn't about taking. It's about giving. That's why it's so worthwhile, when done right.

"...there's a genuine cause for concern when people cite widespread singleness as an excuse to promote policies that denigrate traditional families."

Sorry Chuck. Legislation isn't saving, and can't save, the traditional American family. I'm annoyed at being treated like a second-class citizen because I'm single - by Christians and by law and taxes. I work my fair share and more. I could use a few tax breaks taking care of my 'eldering' mother. Laws aren't going to preserve Christianity as it was. It's a post-Christian, nearly post-American society. It's scary, but true.

The only way to get back those traditions and institutions and the respect that once existed for them is for deep change in the HEART, a grassroots longing for those things that gets people looking for them, longing for them, and fighting to preserve them again.

The Supreme Court has almost dictatorial power in this country, and it's out of control. Nothing, seemingly, can stop the descent of this country into anarchy and totolitarianism or some form of socialism/communism.

But the fact that there are millions of single people is just that - a fact - and punishing us for it via taxes and other cultural ostracism isn't going to turn your lost world around.

I'm a single Christian by the way. There, I've said my 2 cents worth.
