SADDAM HUSSEIN CAPTURED

SADDAM HUSSEIN CAPTURED

Former Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has been captured in his home town of Tikrit, according to reports.

There has been no independent verification of the news but Sky New's Foreign Editor Tim Marshall says the source of the news is usually reliable.

The US Defence Department says it has had no confirmation of the claims, which come from Iraqi Kurd leader Jalal Talabani, says the Iran news agency IRNA.

Hundreds of exultant people have taken to the streets of Kirkuk, firing weapons into the air in celebration.

A press conference has been announced for 12pm GMT.

In Baghdad, a spokeswoman for the US-led operation notified reporters that a "very important" announcement will be made at the press conference.

I'm not sure how the locals are handling this. I'm in a very isolated posting right now, far from the closest villiage.

The soldiers here seem in good spirits, but there's no corks popping, at least that I've seen. It may disappoint everyone, but we're all going to come in to work at the regular times tomorrow and carry out the tasks at had. There hasn't been any discussion right now how this will affect any of the military missions.

Personally I'm a little disappointed. I was at the ISG complex last night, among all the palaces there. And to think that he comes in the day I leave! I'm sincerely glad that this *might* shorten the deployments of some of the troops, especially the guardsmen and reservists. However, I'm feeling a little like I did after the Berlin wall came down. Then I felt the satisfaction of success and of a job completed, but rather empty because I had spent my adult life preparing for war with the Soviet Block. And all that evaporated with one momentous event.

Now there are similarities. Our job here is far from done, but the main reason for us being here is done. It's as if it's time to move on...

It's too soon to tell for sure what will happen in the next few days and weeks. Will this capture matter to our opponents? If so, will it hasten or dely the total surrender of reisistance?

Too much to do tonight to celebrate. And no champagne anyway.

I hope that you really enjoy this. You've put your heart, mind, and soul into these threads that have inspired so many of us. Let your emotions go, take some time off, relax. You've earned it.

Let us celebrate the lamentations of our domestic enemies:

"I don't believe it - it's too pat - and what - no film crew ???

. . the USA had LOTS of footage for the Lynch "rescue"

. . Personally - I am still of the opinion that it is a double

. . the USA would never allow the REAL Saddam to talk to anyone, - he has more dirt on the USA and it's WH illegal antics ( e.g. supplying WMD's to himself and others) than any scandal rag could even dream about.

The REAL Saddam will never be allowed to speak out to the media as long as the BFEE has any say about it, and IF it is the REAL Saddam, he will undoubtedly end up suffering with the same (drug-induced?) amnesia that Jessica developed.

Sorry, the BFEE and previous Administrations have told too many lies, and if the pResident is able/willing to pull off a massive deceit to the world so that he can sneak over to parade around with a rubber turkey - -

'nuff said

USA's WH, DoD, CentCom, and anything remotely related has lost all credibility in my mind.

Let a team of Internationally selected doctors by the UN and nations that OPPOSED this invasion perform their own DNA tests -

THEN

- I might give this "capture" of Saddam some validity

we thank god for his arrest so that the mojahideen will show that they are the ones leading the war not some dictator who has nothing to do with Islam and muslims.

I don't think some people realize yet that this trumps the WMDs. Saddam IS the WMD.

I second that sentiment...

Eagle Eye, rest well knowing your service contributed to that 'evaporation' of the Soviet threat and this hasn't been ignored by the free world...stay safe,

Jim

..Phone ringing off the wall,...

Called my son at about 06:00 EST. I got to him first. He says that he has received about 20 calls already. That was an hour or so ago.

This is going to wonders for the morale of our Troops.

My Fox affiliate switched back to football. Can't really blame them - think they're contractually obliged to after Murdoch paid a gazillion for the rights.
