Al-Qaeda Operatives Visited South Korea: NIS Report
by Bang Seong-su (ssbang@chosun.com)
The (S. Korean) National Information Service (NIS) --(Note: equivalent to CIA/FBI) revealed on Monday that members of a Southeast Asian terrorist organization with ties to Al-Qaeda recently infiltrated South Korea, surveyed the security system at airports and U.S. military installations and left the country. Korea is preparing anti-terrorism and emergency measures, the NIS said.
According to Millennium Democratic Party lawmaker Ham Seung-hee, the NIS said in a report to the National Assembly's Committee on Intelligence that this year a man named Mohammed came to Seoul from Manila and examined airport security. The man is said to be a member of an organization associated with Al-Qaeda that is active in the Philippines and other Southeast Asian countries.
The NIS also reported that a man known as Omar, presumably from Kenya, has come to Korea two or three times since 1999. Staying for a few days, he studied the security situation around U.S. Army bases and then left the country. The man is presumed to be connected with the attack on the U.S. Embassy in Nairobi.
Infiltration attempts by members of Al-Qaeda are growing more frequent, with some being caught be immigration and expelled from the country within 10 hours.
Recently, a member of Al-Qaeda's largest associated group in Indonesia, Mansur Islamabiya, entered Japan and procured about 100 items that could be used in terrorist activities, the NIS reported.
Rep. Ham also said the NIS reported that Al-Qaeda's and its associated groups' sphere of operations is slowly moving from the Middle East and Southeast Asia to Northeast Asia, and that that the possibility of terrorist attacks on U.S. allies such as South Korea and Japan is increasing.
The NIS also reported that the government has been strengthening its anti-terrorism measures since last year, and emergency preparations have been strengthened even more since the war in Iraq.

I think South Koreans are beginning to understand that they can't afford knee-jerk Anti-Americanism. Between Communist North Korea and Muslim Indonesia, they are at one of the centers of the terror network. As Carlos the Jackel pointed out, the Communists, the Islamists, and the drug lords will all work together because they share the same enemies.

Should be communists, Islamists, drug lords and democrats all work together.
People are fooling themselves if they don't think China gives aid to the Mohammedans, too.

Lots of big jumbos flying out of Incheon.
But the same is true at BKK, SIN, KL, Narita, and the rest.
Why pick on Korea?

Phillipines + middle eastern terrorists reminds freepers of allegations regarding the actual background of WHICH USA terrorist incident 7 years ago....?
See, the terrorist war on America began quite some time ago. Our betters apparently just chose to bury their heads in the sand...

This kind of genuine international cooperation is what's needed. If every country were as diligent and efficient in rooting the AQ out, they wouldn't be able to find a home anywhere.

Why pick on South Korea?
I am assuming that Al Qeda and Iraq are allies.
1. Iraqi scuds were made in North Korea.
2. South Korea just sent troops to Iraq.
3. AQ would rather hit the ROK forces rather than JPN or US forces in Asia. JPN would remilitarize and romp on the Phillipines (but this time in concerted action with the US). US forces already are in the Phillipines and don't really give a rip what any Militant Muslim Terror cell thinks anyway.
4. A large enough hit at ROK targets may permit NORKOR to gain a strategic advantage on the 38th Parallel and reignite the Korean War (diverting US attention to the Korean peninsula from Iraq).
