I was a personnel mgt specialist from 1967 - 1974...even before the draft ended, gays that were drafted, would rather be drafted and go to nam as an infantryman with a very high mortality rate than to simply request a discharge for being gay.

Yes, a few did and some that weren't also requested a discharge saying they were..but this was not the norm in my experience.

Being a booty bandit back then carried a very large stigma attached to it...how would you parents explain your being discharged early?? no physical defects...wouldn't take long for small town America to figure out why jr. was home.

Interesting perspective from your draft days. I feel a draft coming back and the gay issue will have to be dealt with. If asking and telling will get you out of the service, then gay will be the Canada of this draft.

I agree. And thanks for your experiences - it shows that homosexuals in the old days would rather risk death than experience the shame of everyone knowing what they did. That's actually rather honorable. Therefore such homosexuals would naturally be discreet about their attraction.
