U.S. find led to Gadhafi decision

The United States intercepted an illegal shipment of thousands of parts of uranium-enrichment equipment bound for Libya in October, leading to Tripoli agreeing to cap its weapons program, U.S. officials confirmed yesterday.

Senior State Department official John R. Bolton plans to fly to London today to make plans with Britain for holding Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to his pledge to dismantle his nuclear-weapons program.

On June 15, 2003 eleven nations agreed on a version of the Proliferation Security Initiative, called the Madrid Initiative for the city where the agreement was reached. The Madrid Initiative was endorsed by Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Australia. The iniative proposed strategies for intercepting cargos suspected of containing chemical, biological or nuclear weapons, or missile components. The US has announced an increase in surveillance in the area in addition to increased interdiction by Japan, South Korea, and Australia.

Presented with Gadhafi's open admission, Ritter went on to accuse the Bush administration of deliberately planting the incriminating WMD evidence to humiliate poor Gadhafi and divert attention from the failure to find WMD in Iraq ;-)

Or is this actually a portion of Iraq's WMD's and where the nuclear WMDs were headed for both safe keeping and their continued development?

Next up: possible exposure of North Korea's involvement in all this?

Although I can't keep up with all the news-media flood, I don't think I've
yet heard Bill Clinton step forward to crow about this suppossed triumphant
culmination of these "10 years of diplomacy".

I suspect after the account of the absolutely flaccid response by Clinton and his
officials (except for Richard Clark, IIRC) to the USS Cole bombing, as detailed in
"Losing Bin Laden", maybe Bill Clinton has (wisely) decided to stay toward
the edge of the media spotlight for awhile.

Germans were somen of the good guys in this story. The German company was simply hired out to bring cargo from point A to point B.

Once they were notified by GERMAN authorities what was going on they went to a FRIENDLY italian port and helped.

One wonders which "Gulf State" this port was in, and where the centrifuges came from. Maybe they were formerly the property of the guy who was dragged from the hole under the date tree?
