Local news just flashed that an Egypt Airliner has crashed in Egypt...

Reporting majority of ~135 passengers are French tourists....

That aircraft had been damaged and repaired early on.

The composite material also has lousy shear strength.

Multiple factors including conflicting info from that airline company and pilots regarding policy in sudden emergencies.

I talked to an engineer friend in Florida within minutes after it happened and he pointed at the composites right away; says he only flies in Boeing jets until they build 'em like Boeing does.

This has been a problem in the fabrication of racing cars and maintenance.

The difference is you still have four wheels on the ground; even if the suspension fails you can hit the wall, spin; end up in the grass; rarely get airborne and die.

Losing a vital component in the air is a no win situation; one rear vertical surface gone and you are history.

Coming in on a wing and no prayer.

Tests normally done on metals to find weaknesses cannot be done on those composites.

They are very light but the drawbacks are significant.

Never heard much later from the manufacturers after that crash.

Too many airlines invested heavily in their jets; all awaiting another "incident".

Remember folks, even if 80-90% of France was against the war, then 10-20% were for it....and then some on that flight are Pro U.S(Not that that really matters, just something to think about, only saddam got 100% backing! ; ) ).....France hasn't had to suffer true terrorism like we have had to...IF this turns out to be terrorism, and they scratch their heads saying, "But we didn't ask for this" slowly but surely it will finally click with more people that if you are not Muslim, you are the enemy.....

visibility is 10KM. Its weather is clear. 10 year old planes are not old... at least in this country... we need a lot more evidence to make a judgement.

Charter jet crashes into Red Sea

A charter jet with 141 people aboard -- most of them French tourists -- crashed into the Red Sea after taking off from the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh, according to officials who feared no one had survived.

The Boeing 737 took off shortly before 5am local time (0300 GMT) and quickly disappeared from radar about seven miles south of the airport, said airport officials.

There was no distress call made, according to officials at Egypt's Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The crash happened amid a week of heightened concerns about terrorist threats from the air that have led to increased security and cancelled flights around the world.

But an initial statement from aviation ministry ruled out terrorism, calling the crash an "accident" that may have been caused by a mechanical problem. The ministry said no one was believed to have survived.

Officials said 135 passengers were aboard the jet operated by the private Egyptian company Air Flash en route to Cairo -- 129 of them French and six Egyptians. There were six crew members aboard.

Rescue teams found the wreckage of the jet close to the coast. They were attempting to find survivors or bodies, according to an official quoted by the Egyptian news agency MENA.

Engineers from the national carrier Egyptair went to try to help determine what happened. Air Flash's phone numbers in Cairo were busy.

The weather was clear in Sharm el-Sheikh and other flights were taking off without incident, officials said.

Sharm el-Sheik is a popular Red Sea tourist resort that also frequently hosts major political and economic summits. Egypt has held several meetings on peace in the Middle East there, including one in which US President George W. Bush met regional leaders in June over the "road map" plan toward creating a Palestinian state. The Prime Minister Tony Blair and his family have been holidaying in Sharm el-Sheikh over the festive period.

"All people who were aboard the plane are dead," Osama al-Sayed, a senior official with Flash Air, told reporters.

The plane disappeared from the radar screens of Cairo airport at 4:44 am (0244 GMT), minutes after taking off from Sharm el-Sheikh airport, the civil aviation authority said.

The crash came amid heightened air security in the face of fears that a passenger airliner could be used for a terror attack.

Yeah, 10 years, but how many cycles? And how many D checks or C checks? If I had a 10 year old jet that flew 20 hours a day with 6 or 7 cycles a day, its gonna be in a hell of a lot of worse shape than a jet with 2 or 3 cycles a day.

Add in the fact that the plane may have been in a bad weather climate, poor maintenance by the prior owners, poor maintenance by the present owners. Sometimes 10 year old planes are in much worse shape than 20 year old planes.

I live about approx 4-5 miles from the Boeing plant in Everett. Home of the 'biggest building in the world'. I know all about the impacts of plane crashes and terrorism, in an economic sense, and what's it's done to this town.
