Dancing man on right: "Newton METERS not Newton Feet, and the mission is COMPLETE!"
Man on left: "Oh ho! you did it, I owe you 5 bucks."
Man in background, center: "Oh darn, I bet everything that we'd mess up again."
Good compilation Dioge, I just GOTTA bust on NASA though..

I read this quickly the first time through and I
thought you were saying, "America - A great people with superior technology seeking new lands

The "dancing man on right" in the blue shirt and jeans is Steve Sqyres, Principal Investigator (in other words, science lead on the mission). The applauding man on the left, with the white hair and moustache, is NASA Administrator Sean O'Keeffe.
These guys (and the other celebrating pros in the pictures) have worked hard, and O'Keefe in particular has deserved a good break for quite a while now.
Dio, I just gotta thank you for these excellent posts. I really appreciate it and occasionally I save one complete to disk and use it to show people who say, "why are we there when they hate us?"
I tell them the best thing to do if you want to be informed is deep-six your TV and start surfing the net.

---caption of AMERICAN (of Asian extraction) pumping his fist in the moment of triumph...
OK, after all the times, I've thrown brickbats at NASA...WAY TO GO GUYS AND GALS!
And you'd think that Saddam would have realized that a country that can do
"action at a distance" all the way to Mars wouldn't have any trouble with
precision "shock and awe" here on Earth...or cleaning out spider-holes!
In Kabul, Afghanis were conquered by the Americans to vanquish the Taliban
and then handed their own country back to them with a new Constitution

Here's a thought to wrap our minds around:
Women in Afghanistan may end up with more respect and better treatment...
than women get in the inner-city hip-hop/gangsta' culture of the
major metropolitan areas of the USA...weird...

I had a chemistry prof who was involved in the Viking Lander back in the 70's. He spent a whole class describing this feeling. What a great thing to experience.
(I bet it was almost as good as I felt when Bush won the election ;->)
p.s. Thanks Dio for all your work. It's much appreciated.

What's with the dour look on that guy's face in the center background?Look at him closely, he's grinning very, very widely, just without showing teeth, and he's applauding (not the moving hand blurred by the camera). Other pictures show him even showing teeth.
He is one of the mission control staff and while he's personally involved, he may not be as deeply invested emotionally as O'Keefe and Squyres are. Their names are on this mission in a way that all of the many thousands of people who make it possible are not. So they are even more happy (and even more relieved) at a success, than the rest of the NASA crowd.
And then, as everyone knows from watching TV, which is never wrong about anything, scientists and engineers are cold unfeeling automatons, except when they are megalomaniacs.
