Fiorina warned against the growing protectionist backlash, saying the only alternative to losing jobs overseas was to make a national decision to stay ahead of foreign competitors by improving grade-school education, doubling federal spending on basic research and forming a national broadband policy, as Japan and Korea have done.

Well... then lets do it. The alternative is a weakened America.

Neither Craig Barret or Carly would be employed if they applied to there prospective companies today.

Craig is starting to feel the pressure here at Intel and is starting to moderate some of his internal comments.

Carly is exactly what all the engineers said years ago, an overpriced sales person with delusions of godhood.

So, Carly thinks no job is America's God-given right?

How nice of Americans to be mained and die fighting in foreign lands to save her sorry company and sorry job, so she can hire foreigners while American veterans come home to unemployment.

I thought Republicans were supposed to support free markets? And not just for goods, but also for labor.

But all I see on the board lately is that we don't want immigrants coming here to perform jobs that others won't. And we don't want companies outsourcing jobs to those who will perform the quality work for lower wages.

I reject the idea that protectionism equals patriotism.

I'd like to see some proof that the 'immigrants' who come here are doing jobs that others won't. Perhaps you meant to say 'immigrants are doing jobs that the owners of the businesses don't want to pay a real wage to Americans who are already here to perform so they hire illegals (what part of illegal do you, as a Republican, not understand?)'.

It's not protectionism to want to stop the brain-drain in this country. The CEO's in this article are very disingenuous. Instead of couching their argument in terms of competitiveness why don't they just come out and say the truth. This is all about their bottom line and they have determined that they would rather not pay an American programmer $75,000 to do a job that an Indian and Chinese programmer can do for 1/3 of that.

you are totally nuts, I have first hand knowledge of what was actually done at Lucent. she was around during the telecom bubble, so everything looked good on paper during her tenure, she bailed at the perfect time, she knew the train wreck was coming.

education is not the problem, who do you think created all of these industries that carly and barrett are busy packing up and sending to india and china? american engineers did, so how all of a sudden can we be "stupid" and in need of government funding?

Carly has one hell of a nerve. That's ok, Carly. Americans are getting angrier by the hour about our right to seek employment in our own country. Employment that will house and feed us decently. Feel the backlash.

This is bossspeak- to slam the education and abilities of the workers they are about to make redundant. It shifts the blame to the 'lazy American' workers and makes it seem like they deserve their fate. It sounds much nicer than the truth which is to say that HP is taking advantage of state provided slave labor workforce in China and their gov't subsidized investments. (In case you think I exaggerate about slave labor, recall that 1,000 striking miners were killed by troops in China).

She may please the crowds but the bitch is hated from top to bottom at HP, and they are the people who really know her.

Is it a coincidence that she looks like the Clinton beast?

Alot of these America businesses were created by them dang Chinese and people from India. It is estimated that almost one quarter of Silicon valley firms were established by people born in a foreign land.

Ten high-tech firms founded by foreigners (Intel, Sun Microsystems, Computer Associates, Solectron Lam Research, LSI Logic, AST Computer, Wang Laboratories, Amtel, Gupta Technologies, and Cypress Semiconductor) generated over $32 billion in revenues in 2002.

So, when these businesses use labor from China and India which is their country of birth, you complain (just joking guys)? I am just throwing this info out, but I bet you didn't know that 25% of the high tech firms in Silicon Valley were created by immigrants.

there is no backlash that can effect people like them, they have all the cash and pay for all the political cover they need.

My first hand knowledge conflicts with yours. I would suggest that HP has better investigative resources than you. Were you correct, would Ms Fiorina have her current job? End of story.

Crawl back to Pres. Bush and inform him that the Cato Institute and Nation Review loves his immigration/offshoring/wage-lowering plan but the 'dumb hicks' which comprise the actual citizens of the US aren't too keen on it and are not going to be fooled by spin or by false appeals to 'free markets.'

Carly has all the money she could ever spend. I'm just trying to make a living at my chosen profession in this dog-eat-dog world.

are you kidding me? the corporate elites want people like Fiorina amongst their ranks. their goals are to inflate stock prices, and make the deals needed to line their pockets, they could care less about actually building anything of substance, and care even less about this country. Why do you think the real people who created HP tried to stop her? They knew the score, what was being done to what their family had created.
