Japan confirms new case of mad cow

Japan confirms new case of mad cow Last Updated Sun, 22 Feb 2004 18:33:22 TOKYO - Japan's Health Ministry has confirmed the 10th case of mad cow disease in the country since 2001.

INDEPTH: Mad Cow Disease

The animal has been slaughtered and will be incinerated, the ministry said Sunday. Sixty other cows from the same farm in Kawagawa prefecture, west of Tokyo, have been quarantined.

Japan tests every cow before it is butchered. This particular Holstein tested positive on Friday. The results were confirmed with a second test on Saturday.

Japan has banned feeding cattle residue from butchered cows, which scientists believe is the main way bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is transmitted.

But the cow which tested positive was born before the ban was instituted.

Japan's last confirmed case of BSE was in November.

You may not be able to afford the beef there anyway. Back in 98 a New York strip was going for $20 in the grocery store and that was imported from Australia.

Perhaps you're not understanding. They test EVERY COW. They found one with BSE, but of course, that one won't be in the grocer. In the good ol' USA, we test 1 in a zillion cows and hope the rest are just fine. You have a much greater chance of getting BSE in the US than in Japan.

No doubt. The Kobe beef is even more ridiculous in price. And its vastly overrated - a good Angus strip beats it 6 ways from Sunday.

(I usually take a lot of jerky with me on these trips).

Ouch. My mother did that years ago when I didn't call her when I was stationed in Germany. My CO tore strips out of my hide for an hour while I stood at attention, then my division officer took over, THEN my department head finished up where he left off.

I called mom the next day :)

They test EVERY COW.

Apparently their government felt the need to do so. And considering that the incubation period of CJD (the human form of mad cow) can be up to 30 years in humans, I'll be dirtnapping long before any case I might pick up would actually affect me. So its not really a big worry for me.

Pass the mushrooms, please.

Yes, and it turned out the Mabton cow was not a downer. It appeared to be a healthy cow, at least nothing that stood out. I know you know this, but not everyone does.

I'm sorry:') I've only done it once. He was supposed to be flying in 911. They promised me he wouldn't get in trouble though. His CO had him call me immediately.

I still eat beaf. I love beaf. But I eat it with the same strange feeling you have walking in an open area in the rain. You know lightning probably won't hit you, but if it does, you're toast.

There are other scientists who argue that it is in fact the toxic chemicals used to treat Warble Fly infestations that cause BSE.

That said, it is a disgusting abomination to feed cattle on the cannibalized waste products of their fellows and shouldn't be done just on principle.

The feedlot system of commercial beef production is also gross. I'm so glad my family can purchase handfed beef from a small producer locally. The difference in taste is astounding.
