Gotta resort to personal attacks as usual.

Please take it as a compliment, Willie, that I value your opinion so much!

Sorry, but that's just flat out wrong. That's the old "Smoot-Hawley" canard, which has been disproven about a thousand times now, but that doesn't keep the free trade uber alles crowd from repeating it over and over again!

Your own source blames Smoot-Hawley, in large part, for the Great Depression.

The crowning folly of the Hoover administration was the Smoot-Hawley Tariff, passed in June 1930. It came on top of the Fordney-McCumber Tariff of 1922, which had already put American agriculture in a tailspin during the preceding decade. The most protectionist legislation in U. S. history, Smoot-Hawley virtually closed the borders to foreign goods and ignited a vicious international trade war.

...

Officials in the administration and in Congress believed that raising trade barriers would force Americans to buy more goods made at home, which would solve the nagging unemployment problem. But they ignored an important principle of international commerce: Trade is ultimately a two-way street; if foreigners cannot sell their goods here, then they cannot earn the dollars they need to buy here. Or, to put it another way, government cannot shut off imports without simultaneously shutting off exports

What's wrong with instant background checks? Do you prefer waiting a couple days?

How about no backdoor registration at all, like it was before 1993, at least in the free states.

There is no "loophole". ALL sales by FFLs must go through NICS. The alleged "loophole" is sales between private citizens.

Furthermore, in Illinois, private citizens MUST record the buyer's FOID number AND wait three days before delivering the firearm, following the day of sale.

"Free market" - translating...not trade with countries we have free trade treaties with, but "free" transfer of assets and jobs to protectionist countries like India and China.

Not to mention technology. Companies such as IBM and Boeing are required to surrender technology in dribs and drabs if they want to build a plant in China. And very often such companies must build a fab in China if they want to sell to the Chinese market. China want Chinese workers to be employed and a situation created where even more (manufacturing) technology can be ripped off right on the shop floor. By industrial spies etc.

The lies continue, getting bigger and bigger...

To use crude but accurate language it's a mindf*uc. An attempt to hypnotize American workers, our great middle class, to accept terms that would have been ridiculed 5 10 15 years ago.

Jack Ryan is a conservative who understands trade. He's going to be the GOP nominee for US Senate in Illinois, and might just pull off a win!

Jack Ryan may be a conservative and he may understand trade but there is nothing in this artricle that shows that he understands the current trade envirornment. Further he does not understand how trade related to the Great Depression if he was accurately quoted.

Lets see he is against the Second Ammendment, according to the article ignorant about the Constitutional means of opening markets to American goods, please explain how this Republican is a Conservative. I really do not understand. Now he seems to be for reducing the regulations on businesses that is in his favor but as to the rest I see nothing that recommends him to conservatives.

According to Elliott Jackalope's source, he's right on the ball about the Great Depression and the disastrous protectionist policies that the sheeple are putting forward these days.

If you want a Buchananite ignoramus, and it sounds like you do, you don't want Jack Ryan, that's for sure! But if you want a conservative, Ryan's the guy, no question.

That indicates a complete ignorance of the actual history involved. The Great Depression came to the USA in 1929 as a result of Fedreal Reserve policies put in place to coordinate with Bank of England policies. The Smoot Hawley traifs were enacted in June 1930 after the Depression was well underway. These tariff increases were put in place alongside other tax increases which caused even more damage to the American economy. The Smoot Hawley tariffs were mostly a response to foreign tariffs which had already been in place and foreign reponses to them.

Now as to disaterous protectionist policies please show one example from American history of disaterous protectionist policies since from 1789 until the Clinton era we had in place protectionist tariffs.

By the way I happen to believe in Free trade I only wish we actually had some. Now once more since this candidate supports making all private transactions involving firearms a subject of Federal inquiry by his supposed support for "closing the gun show loophole" and his trade stance is clearly based upon bad information regarding teh Great Depression no matter what "elliot Jackalope" states tell me how this man is not just some other Republican candidate who says he is conservative but will still go along with the liberal line.

By the way remember it was teh Clinton administration that negotiated our current trade envirornment and if he is suipprting that he is running on a Democrat platform.

1. Protectionism in the 1920's.
2. Do you really think the Great Depression was unavoidable after 1929? Smoot Hawley likely turned a recession into a depression.

The Actually the history of the protective tariff during the 1920's was that it decreased from 1922 onwards. learn your history before you try to lecture on it.

The effects of teh Smoot Hawley tariff were relatively minor one way or the other and it actually had some positive effects. As to the Depression being inevitable after 1929 there may have been some actions that could have been taken to avoid it but they were in monetary policy and fiscal policy not tariff policy. In thew interim people who learn false lessons from non-factual history have tried to dominate the debate on trade. The Smoot-Hawley tariff did nothing to cause the Onset of the Great Depression and the fall off in US exports was easily attributable to the decrease in the business activity in most European nations that had started as early as the mid 1920's in Austria.

The above said I was not a fan of a number of provision of Smoot Hawley but argue the tariff on the basis of fact.
