FR DNS problems...

DNS lookups failing for FR here - no such host. Apparently I'm not the only one, judging from a glance at the Yahoo FR board. Dunno if it's my ISP (Verizon) or what, but I had to manually edit the hosts file to get here. Presumably, if you can post, you're not having this problem, but there are more than a few people who can't post right now because of it...

Same thing happened to us once with ATT. It is a big annoyance until everything gets synced up again, but don't expect an apology from the registrar.

Somebody filed a complaint with ICANN. I don't know who it is, but I bet I can tell you how they voted for president. So all it takes is for someone who can frivolously complain to ICANN and ICANN arbitrarily removes FR from the root nameservers - total BS?!

Just remember that editing the HOSTS file will not work if you're using a http proxy server (like @ some workplaces). Exactly that is what happened to me.

Just remember to undo it ASAP. If you forget and we change IP addresses you'll be lost. Thanks...I'll figure that out if I get the " The page cannot be displayed" or " cannot find the server" messages. :)

Yes, but the lefties there gave me the info I needed to log back in here. Its probably hardwired in them to hand over secrets to the enemy.

I was relegated to reading news off of DU for a while. So I'm going to need to take a shower. Tell me what happens when I get back. hehe
Actually, I went over to that LibertyPost I've heard about. I have to admit that's how I found my way back here; someone there was kind enough to post the IP equivalent of FR's URL.

I don't know if this is just coincidence...I tried to open FR on my Cox account & aquired a trojan. Maybe my tin foil wasn't on tight enough.

So when is ICANN going after the other million or so domains that have intentionally bogus contact info? ICANN just forwarded the bitch. GKG pulled the plug.

Perhaps consider a service like NetSol's Private Registration service. They initially offered it to prevent harvesting of names and numbers in the WHOIS database. Instead of your actual contact information, NetSol provides a NetSol e-mail address, address, and phone number on your behalf. That would at least prevent DU types from causing problems. I use the service and it works well. I'm not employed by NetSol! ;)

OK, I haven't read through all the posts, because I was just now able to login. Let me walk through what I had to do, because I tried the instructions on the Yahoo site about updating my hosts file, but it took some experimenting to do it in exactly the right way. I'm pretty savvy about computers, but was just not quite doing it right, so maybe my confession will help someone else out there struggling. (it was also a lot of a lot of fun trying to solve this with the constant work interruptions. Don't these people know about PRIORITIES?????)
I'm on Windows 98 at work, so here's what I had to do:
I opened Notepad in the Start-Programs-Accessories menu. (I found that Wordpad did NOT work for this procedure for me). Then I went to "open" and then navigated to the Windows file. I had to change the option to show "all files", and then located the 'hosts' file. It confused me at first because when the file opened up it was blank, so I wasn't sure it worked, but keep going. Then I pasted the following on the first line:
209.157.64.200 www.freerepublic.com
Then I went to "Save As" and had to navigate again to the Windows file as outlined above. Then I clicked on the "hosts" file listed there, and pressed the save button. It asked me if I wanted to replace the file, and answered "yes" As a note, I tried other options that had been suggested to save the file without any extension, which I did, but it was still adding some exentions to the file when it saved it. Only by the procedure I listed here was I finally able to get it done.
Anyway, that's my story, hope it helps someone. Ah, now I can work comfortably and without the feeling of panic that I don't know what's really going on in the world! I'll go and post this over in Yahoo to see if it helps anyone else who have a feeble brain like mine. Hope everyone has a great day!

I had a Free Republic main page from 9-14-2001 come up on my laptop yesterday while I was on the site. You, too? I thought I was the only one who was in a time warp. <:D

I just type in the IP address 209.157.64.200 in my address bar. Piece of cake for us nerds.
FreepDNS
There may be people here who are using DNS cache and not aware that they are on borrowed time.
They should be pinged here to make them aware of this.
It may be days before this is fully resolved.

I was going through withdrawal symptoms there, whew! I'm glad FR is back and available for viewing.
