I don't know what generation you're from but my son is 27 and uses (still) the gay term to mean weird or nerdy. He explained it to me as being used the same as queer would be so something can be queer or gay.

I'm hopelessly confused. Doesn't queer mean gay which means homosexual? Or has that changed? I'm in my 40s. I never knew that queer meant nerdy. Oh well, who cares.

What's funny is that likewise, "queer" did not originate w/homosexuality either, yet that apparently was likewise applied to them and then homos started commandeering it for themselves. "Gay" must've been more acceptable to them, tho, altho you'll still see proud references to "queer" (hah! to wit: "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy")

Difference being that "queer" was always "weird", whereas "gay" was "happy", so I'm sure the homos liked it better. Most of this is just speculation, tho! ;-)
