Maybe there's a cop in their office that she likes who rejected her. Girls DO stupid things sometimes. I really don't think she's sick. I've known lotsa straight A kids who were well liked....They all have "stupid" stories to tell.

Yes it is speculation at this point --- I'm just thinking of ways that the girl might not have done this out of evil intentions and maybe also isn't completely out of her mind needing to be locked up.

Really it seems we should be glad that a missing person was found ---- not raped, not stranged but alive and safe --- maybe not mentally perfect but it's good she was found and is alive.

Once again I'll ask.... What if this farce had gone to a lineup? What if Ms. Audrey decided that she was enjoying this attention? She has shown no reticence in building lie upon lie - what makes you think she wouldn't point out a 'perp'? My GOD PEOPLE! The false witness of a FELONY is a major offense in a civil society - we are talking about the liberty of the innocent being at risk.

I have learned the stories of people on this board who have family members with mental illness. These stories are heart wrenching, but also uplifting when I see how fellow freepers deal with such adversity and make the best of an extremely difficult situation whilst offering support to other people in similar dire straights.

This being said, if the woman were 30 and unattractive I bet there would be A LOT less sympathy for her. Think for a moment those of you that are immediately willing to assume she is "off the charts mentally ill" before you critisise those that take the equally likely opinion (given the facts as they are now) that she may just be a good 'ole fashion' liar. Point is, what is interesting are the reactions of ALL of us on this board to this story and to one another.

Good question. In all likelyhood she was staying with someone in a private residence. If she were at a hotel or motel she would probably have been noticed. It's almost impossible to think that she were staying outside bc she would have got hypothermia. Perhaps our "Greta Garbo" found some "shed" or some makeshift area to sleep that protected her from the elements.

I am of cynical mind also. Unfortunately or fortunately it's my nature. I believe that she is mentally ill....however there are degrees of mental illness, as there are degrees of punishment.

Not necessarily --- I think it might be even more understandable --- the fact that she is attractive and an A student might make some less understanding, maybe there'd be more sympathy if she was a sad geeky looking girl with terrible grades.

That is interesting, because my initial feeling about why she did this and what prompted this behavior was parental pressure.

The 4.0 av and other school stuff was what tripped my BS detector to begin with.

She wanted to get out of the situation and could not express this to anyone.

Add the chronic pressure and intelligence with the failure phobia and you have a big boom!(called schizophrenia or something close)

Add to the mix that she only transferred to the University 6 months ago....that 4.0 average is something she probably had to keep up from the last school. I had a very intelligent friend way back about 20 years ago at UCLA she came from a conservative catholic sheltered family. She went to college and just could not handle Los Angeles in the eighties, (it was quite wild). She gained 50 lbs and transferred to a community college part time. Got a job and used the tuition money for her own "spending" money. She kept this up for 3 years without telling her parents. I think she ended up ok, but I suspect it's a mild version of what Audrey is going through.

The more I read this thread, the more I do not understand what happened or why. I am glad I don't have to deal with it. I'm glad she's alive. I'm sad for everyone in her family but also glad....

My mom personally knows a family whose little girl was kidnapped when she was 6...she'd be 15 now if she's alive, but they do not know. There is something so sad about a 9 year age progression photograph.

Schizophrenia, acting out, I don't know what troubles Audrey, but she's alive and those who love her know where she is tonight. They've got a huge problem on their hands, but not a dead daughter. Maybe she's psychotic, schizophrenic. Maybe she's got the biggest mean streak a person can have. Most of us seem not to want to believe that. You can't take a pill for 'mean.' There's no med for 'cruel.'

The taxpayers are out some money, but there are worse causes...I'm glad that when one of us goes lost, the rest of us will drop what we're doing and try to find the missing, even though sometimes we're being duped.

One thing we can all be grateful for. We don't have to judge her and we don't have to try to fix her ourselves. It's a blessing we all have distance enough from this that the discussion is academic.

I think you are right. I think, in her mind, it was either find a way to get out of her school without dissapointing everyone who knew her, especially her parents,

or killing herself.


I've known top achievers that opted for suicide when they couldn't keep up their "image".

Right.

We're at the point where there is no longer a need for the matter to be highly public, and of course it won't be unless this was a "book deal" move...so we'll all be left with our assumptions and cynical frustration over being made a rube, and you can see that emotion is running all over the place. Some are sympathetic, many are angry. Imagine being more directly affected so that you have to deal with her yourself sometime!

But we'll never really know what this really was, more than likely, even if it's spun into some bizarre movie or book.

And if we can't stand not knowing, or let our hearts close up against the next victim, we really have lost something.

I've been saying *I* think she wanted to be able to ditch her college with parental blessing. One reason could very well be the boyfriend.

He's taking the next semester off. Some panic of losing him might have prompted her actions.
