Thanks much for the initial post. Would have been unaware without it. The real world doesn't intrude when I am on the net (until the tornado hits)!

It looks like it has gone south of me in Buffalo Grove; good luck to all of those in the directly impacted zone.

Tune in to WJOL-AM 1340. They are really covering this well.

Joliet Police are reporting that there are no reports of injuries, including the Walgreens location.

However, there is very significant property damage in the Cathedral Area and the near west side.

Some reports of gas leaks and down wires.

Joliet Fire is going house-to-house to check on residents.

"The real world doesn't intrude when I am on the net (until the tornado hits)!"

This was a good example of a tornado outbreak that was not well forecast or communicated by the media. That's why it's a good idea to get a NOAA Weather Radio at Radio Shack. Make sure to get a model that has the SAME (Specific Area Message Encoding) feature. This will filter out alerts for counties where you do not live.

I was aware of it just because I am a weather nut! Been a Skywarn Spotter/Ham Radio Guy/Storm Chaser for the last ten years.

The weather in this country seems strange this year. When I was in Boston a few weeks ago (second week of March), it was snowing. Yesterday, it was eighty five degrees for the Boston Marathon.

Best of luck to all of you in the Illinois area.

Eh, it wasn't the media.

SPC didn't even have Northern Illinois in a "slight risk" area late this afternoon.

It's amazingly difficult to predict severe. There was a "Particularly Dangerous Situation" tornado box from SPC a few days ago that didn't produce a tornado.

I was waiting to bring up the latest SPC "Slight Risk" area. As spotters we are trained not to ignore areas near, but not in, a Risk or Watch Box area. That was the case today.

Shows you even the pro's have trouble predicting severe weather. One has to be aware and adopt rapidly, during severe weather season.

Some tips,

- Play Keep Up, not Catch Up with the latest forecast.

- Have A Personal Plan Of Action at home, work and during travel.

- Get a NOAA Weather Radio.

- Regardless of your location, do you know where the nearest Tornado Shelter is?

- Do you have a Personal Communication Plan during emergencies?

Not to nitpick but only a couple of hours before the outbreak here's what the local NWS issued. Ouch!

This does appear to be a very atypical event. Classic parameters were not in evidence. Only very high shear values were notable. This storm deserves some research so we can learn how better to anticipate an atypical event such as this.

Thanks for the report on Downers Grove. Much appreciated. I live in Florida and Downers Grove.

I'm in Florida right now. I have lots of family in the DG and Naperville environs. Looks like these areas lucked out.

It's been quiet all evening here. I heard some thunder off in the distance but thats all. I don't think we even got much rain. It DID rain earkier in the day but it stopped around 5PM or so here.
