Hawaii's 1.25 million population completed a total of 1.23 million calls in their two hour voting period (6 hours behind East Coast Time) a large portion which were for Jasmine Trias says Kevin Laverty of Verizon Wireless.
That's 24,000 more than New Jersey which has seven times the population. Overall, Hawaii logged more calls than all of Verizon's 29 coverage states except New York and California in the post-Idol hours.
Though the island votes helped Jasmine Trias, they make up a portion of a national total that may top 25 million. Other theories abound about how the vote veered so wildly from the consensus of judges and qualified observers.
Many AI Folowers believe children and teens, who are more likely to be passionate and prolific voters, lean towards their own age group, which includes Diana DeGarmo and Trias.
Some fans appearing to be casting votes against caustic judge Simon Cowell. When Cowell ripped John Stevens, voters kept him. On Tuesday, Cowell told Trias everyone in Hawaii would need five phones to save her.
The question of racism: Much the same as when black women Fantasia Barrino, LaToya London, and Jennifer Hudson were in the bottom three, some fans wonder whether color is affecting votes.

I agree that Fantasia has an attitude problem, and it could get in the way if she ever becomes a star. I was just comparing singing and performing capability. BTW, both girls started performing at the age of 5. I was talking about the extra degree of life experience and maturity that the three years provides. Fantasia has already had a child. Diana is little more than a kid, herself. Makes a difference in what emotion each girl can bring to a song at this stage of their lives. Speaking strictly about musical ability, I like both girls and would not be unhappy if either one became the AI. As for Jasmine, although cute, she's definitely a cut below the other two.
They've done the first ep. of each season "commercial-free", though they did a long commercial spot before and after the show. It was very easy to get hooked on 24 in season 1 with a very movie-like first episode without all of the commercials.
24 is great on DVD. (As is Babylon 5, Firefly, Farscape, ...)
I bought Friends Series One on DVD and really liked it. I missed most of King of Queens. I concur with your assessment of tv shows on DVD. I could care less about commercials.
She lives a street over from me and you are correct, sir.
I'm looking forward to Season Three - haven't seen a minute of it when it airs. It should be on DVD probably come September.
Season Three of CSI will be out, too, but I've seen every ep on tape delay, so I don't know if I'll rent that one. The problem is that there are very few TV shows on DVD that I have much interest in. It might be fun to see a bunch of LA Law, but it's not available. CSI is great, but CSI: Miami leaves me cold, thanks to my distaste for David Caruso.
Speaking of DVD's, my Netflix Queue is empty so I gotta go pick some more things to watch...

Thanks. I appreciate the confirmation. Am I also correct in thinking that DiGarmo is an Italian name?
You're dead right about that one. Jasmine has real problems with that very isssue. Tuesday it was literally painful for me to listen to her performances. She also has a knack for picking songs that are absolutely devastating to the ears if there is the slightest pitch issue.
Why wouldn't they give them ear pieces?
Its "DeGarmo" and yes..correct again.
What I'm trying to figure out is why anyone cares, much less watches the program.
Why do people watch sports ...or follow politics?
Thanks.
A google search brings up a lot of french louisiana families FWIW
Indeed. With some 6 billion souls on board this planet, it's just plain common sense that we humans have a wide range of tastes in entertainment. As TV fare goes these days, AI is a clean, old-fashioned, pleasant talent show with a modern twist the viewing audience gets to vote to keep their favorites on the show. The performers are young and earnest if not always talented, and they don't dress like cheap tarts and pimps (e.g., Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, etc.)
Granted, it's not high-brow stuff, but it's light entertainment somewhat reminiscent of an earlier era.
Interesting. So going back far enough, the name comes from French roots. In any case, she's a really cute kid with a big talent. I wish her all the best. It will be interesting to see how far any of the former AI's and runner ups go in their careers. Wonderful opportunity for those kids.
Youre right, Diana DiGarmo probably has the right features to be marketed as an 'American Idol.' But if the voting will make that happen, i'm not sure.
In my case, I watch it with my nine year old son. There's precious little on network television that is suitable viewing for a pre-teen in prime time. OK, some of Simon's comments can be mean-sounding, but at least I'm not worried about foul language, sexual content, or someone's boob popping out.
I've become a fan of the show, not only because I enjoy vocal music but because I enjoy the "excitement" of getting ready to watch with my boy, and of seeing him get excited about his favorites, and helping him to vote for his choice.
I know it's not high-brow or hip, but not everything has to be.
Thank you both for clarifying the issue. Can't always believe everything you read on the internet.
Complete opposite of Season 2 -- it starts weak and gets much stronger.
She lives a street over from me and you are correct, sir.
Her featrures say otherwise and if I am not mistaken they showed some scenes of her life in Georgia and I think a picture of her black father.
