Knowledge of Abuse May Go Higher Yet
The Washington Post ^ | May 16, 2004 | R. Jeffrey Smith

Army intelligence officers suspected that a Syrian and admitted Jihadist who was detained at Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad knew about the illegal flow of money, arms and foreign fighters into Iraq. But he was smug, the officers said, and refused to talk. So last November, they devised a special plan for his interrogation, going beyond what Army rules normally allowed.

An Army colonel in charge of intelligence-gathering at the prison, spelling out the plan in a classified cable to the top U.S. military officer in Iraq, said interrogators would use a method known as "fear up harsh," which military documents said meant "significantly increasing the fear level in a security detainee." Their aim was to make the 31-year-old Syrian think his only hope in life was to talk, undermining his confidence in what they termed "the Allah factor."

According to the plan, interrogators needed the assistance of military police supervising his detention at the prison, who ordinarily play no role in interrogations under Army regulations. First, the interrogators were to throw chairs and tables in the man's presence at the prison and "invade his personal space."

"Does the Syrian reveal any valuable info as a result of the tactics?"

They don't say anything that I remember, just about the mechanics of the operation and why.

"Even the GOP members of Congress are jumping ship to save their own skins."

Would you stop it already?! Sheesh.

This is a PR disaster, no matter what.

The Bush admin should've made it clear such measures of discomfort and even humiliation would be used to save American lives.

This is a big failure by the admin.

Look, when Bush goes down it'll be the fault of a lot of conservatives too.

Too many conservative opinion makers, from Rush Limbaugh to George Will, Bill Kristol and the rest of the gang at the Weekly Standard and some of the pundits at National Review have been undermining Bush in order to advance their own agenda.

With friends like them Bush didn't need that many more enemies to do him in.

"I'm not about to register at Washington .comPost just to find out how this story ends. Does the Syrian reveal any valuable info as a result of the tactics?"

It's a Washington Compost story. I'm sure it ends like they all do... "It's Bushs fault!"

Hey, we weren't supposed to win the first time either; but some of us believe in the power of prayer.

Also, Bush and Rove aren't dummies.

Your pessimism is not American. Americans believe anything good can be accomplished.

Says nothing about torture. Talked with a close friend of Michael Spann's famiy today (Killed in Afghanistan last year) and she said the family is extremely upset with the pictures coming out of Abu G. and the mention of this humiliation rising to the level of torture. Seems they tortured Michael before murdering him--things like breaking his legs and other unspeakable things that the pics and so-called torture of these detainees don't begin to rise to. They want to know why the media isn't juxtaposing pics and stories of true torture of Americans along with these pics. Seems Mr. Berg, who is supposed to be as a direct result of Abu G. is the only story of an American, when they have tortured, hacked up, burned Americans--and he is being centerpieced to back up the Abu G. stories and to show his family Bush-bashing.

I have more than had it with both the media and many in Congress who want to harp on about this mess. Let the Army and Rummie handle it. The pols are just jousting for face time.

I'm contacting Sens. Shelby and Sessions and my Rep. about doing something about stopping all the nonsense and censuring Ted the Perp.

And while I don't want to see our interrogators pull out fingernails or hack off body parts---if they know someone is a jihadist for sure, line him up in front of a firing squad and let the first volley go over his head. If that doesn't scare him into talking, come closer, and if still no answers, let the third time be the charm. I do not consider that torture, and terrorists do not come under the Geneva Conv.
These people UNDERSTAND that kind of interrogation, and since they already hate us, at least let them respect us--that kind of treatment they respect.

It isn't over until the fat lady sings.

With friends like you - who needs enemies!

Everyone I know - including me is going to vote for GW. We don't fall for lefty propaganda!

You must have never been in a real tough fight . Here's a tip, when you get into a tough spot (which I don't think by a long shot Bush is in yet) you keep on fighting because if you do, something good always happens. Or put another way, God helps those who help themselves.

What ever it takes in order to save American lives. Is protecting the American public part of our government's duty? Is is not the most important duty? I could care less what they have to do!

Yes, we were.

Bush was ahead in the polls until the Dems revealed the DUI conviction just before the election.

The result was that several million Christian conservatives who had intended to vote for Bush didn't, and he lost the popular vote which he should have won handily.

Also, Bush and Rove aren't dummies.

I'm not so sure Rove is as smart as he's cracked up to be.

He had Bush doing last-minute campaigning in New York and California instead of statres where he had a chance.

There's this, buried deep in the article:

The memo, obtained by The Washington Post, also states "it is imperative that interrogators be provided reasonable latitude to vary their approach," depending on a detainee's background, strengths, resistance, and other factors. It also explicitly demands humane treatment and requires that any dogs present during the interrogations be muzzled.

Your skin is too thin if you're thinking I'm trying to smear the administration. I posted it for informational purposes only. How did you think I picked my name? From where I worked I could see the WTC on Sep 11, 2001 without TV. You're quite mistaken if you think I want to see a Kerry or any rat in the White House.
