I haven't read the whole report, only excerpts given to press agencies. Some of these excerpts said Iraq was indeed working on such weapons, but other said quite the contrary. And, alas, Dr Kay himself made contradictory declarations.

Quite frankly I'd much prefer the issue to be either abandoned or backep up by a undisputable find.

I wish they'd just shut up about this. Why does Powell go so far in statements like these?? The administration just keeps making it worse, like with this Abu Gharub POW scandal. Shut up already! It's obvious Saddam Hussein's Iraq was not innocent of WMD charges as they've found programs and evidence that they were in fact in violation. That right there should say enough. But getting to the WMD-the whole world lied and misled then and I'm sick of the President and administration taking this charge that it led us to war on a lie when there is so much hypocrisy all around that discredits such a claim. And the WMD we'd be looking for would be complicated to find in the first place and easy to bury under sand or in a house someplace. I'm sick of this insanity. Here's yet another story on it.

Scared into being soft on treason? How un-American.

They said that, but again, it's impossible to spin away the fact that EVERY intel service on the planet thought (and many still think) Saddam had WMDs. When this comes from sources as varied and at odds as Iran and Israel, there is some truth there.

By and large, I hesitate to use the treason word against ANY American especially people like Powell whom I think have high integrity. He hasn't hesitated yet to say what he thinks, yet has supported the pres. No, at this point, I'm not interested in "treason."

I think there may be another possibility. What if Saddam did dismantle his WMD program - which may include burying it, secretly shipping it to Syria, etc? Saddam was still not cooperating with the weapon inspectors (although Hans Blix was just plain useless, then throw in whatever bribery was going on). Could Saddam have then been playing a bluff - to give an impression in the region that he still had active WMD's, ready to go? If he was indeed bluffing, then, HE LOST BIGTIME!

Powell is not linked to pushing Chalabi, however, Doug Feith and many others in the VP's office did push the Chalabi lies. They were either duped, and should resign, or they were willing dupes in an act of supreme anti-patriotism.

Isn't Sarin gas a weapon of mass destruction? Seems today's
find of an artillery shell filled with Sarin Gas qualifies,
doesn't it?

What say ye, Mr. Powell?

"Would he take such risks?"

Well, ask yourself why the administration STILL refuses to insist that there are AQ in Iraq, despite tons of evidence that they were there before we invaded and that they are certainly there now. Why? I think it has to do with "burden of proof" and the media. Anything short of a ballistic missile with Saddam's fingerprints on it and a chem/bio warhead is going to be dismissed as "not" a "WMD." I think this is an acknowledgment of the nature of the MEDIA rather than the nature of the EVIDENCE.

BTW, story out as we speak: Sarin gas bomb exploded today in Iraq. Hmmmm.

Absolutely possible. IMHO, probable that this was the scenario. I suspect the French were telling him not to worry.

Problem is, I don't think they were lies, nor does ANY intel service in the world. That's where you are having a problem---explaining how every single intel service, including all those who have different sources (and those like the Israelis and Iranians who have VERY different objectives) all ended up with the same info.

Since Colin Powell himself made that rather dramatic presentation at the U.N. holding up a small vial of white powder representing anthrax, I think some intrepid reporter ought to pin him down on where he believes the source of the deadly anthrax was that killed several people in the wake of 9/11, an event now conveniently forgotten by most people. This is after all still an unresolved issue the last time I checked.

Now that the artillery shell was found, and Gen. Kimmit has announced the find of a stockpile in an ammo dump, that scenario is out the window. Hey libs, here's the WMD's!

(butbutbutbut Bush planted them! /foaming.at.mouth /Bagdad.Bob)

Remember, this is an NY Times article. Powell was probably misquoted at the very least.
