French Have Much to be Humble About
The Sydney Morning Herald ^ | June 1, 2004 | Gerard Henderson

The republic's inglorious military history leaves it on the wrong side of debate about proper use of force

Sunday marks the 60th anniversary of the D-Day landings at Normandy in north-west France, which began the liberation of much of Western Europe from Nazi Germany rule. The US President, George Bush, and the British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, will be present at the commemoration. The Prime Minister, John Howard, will have a minor role (about 3000 Australians were involved in the invasion of France, primarily as air crew).

Naturally, France will be represented on June 6 by its President, Jacques Chirac. For the first time, the German Chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, has been invited to a D-Day commemoration.

At a time when the "give-peace-a-chance" mantra is again prevalent in the land, it is worth recording that Adolf Hitler's regime was crushed by military force and that the D-Day landings were led by the Americans and the British. No member of any pacifist society, nor any member of any international organisation, ever troubled Hitler's Reich. What's more, despite Charles de Gaulle's attempt to rewrite history, the French played only a small part in their nation's liberation in 1944 and 1945.

And the French spit on and desecrate American graves buried in their soil.

I agree!

When confronting evil - the only thing that matches the yellow streak running down the back of the modern frechmen, is the yellow stream running down their legs.

Representing the NAZI'S? Or rewriting history?

Watch the protestors, they'll be calling Bush the Nazi. Saturday night live material, IMHO!

The streets of Paris are lined with trees so the German army can march in the shade.

I liked Mark Steyn's take on the French:
Like the French Resistance, tiny in its day but of apparently unlimited manpower since the war ended, for some people it's not obvious which side to be on until the dust's settled.

The French are considering modernizing to a two-level system for the 21st century. "Run" and "Hide" just delay matters, so they'll be removed for efficiency purposes.

Schroeder will play the German part in the ceremonial surrender of Paris.

Well said. French know pastries and wine, and that's about it.

....so the German army can march in the shade.

Go ahead, blame the Germans.

Some Republican recently told the joke with "...invading armies...".

When Schroeder presents himself to Chiraq, does Chiraq lick Schroeders's left boot, right boot or both boots? How long does the boot licking go on for, an hour? Two hours? Or just when ever the boots get dust? Ditto for questions of Chiraq coat-holding, drink fetching, groveling, ect...

the French spit on and desecrate American graves

I heard a story on radio the other day that when de Gaulle was pulling out of NATO and wanted the Americans out, LBJ told
Sec o' State Rusk to ask de Gaulle if that included the graves.

Rusk hemmed and hawed and said he couldn't ask de Gaulle that. LBJ ordered him to do so. de Gaulle, in the meeting with
Rusk, closed his materials, stood up, and left without a word.

"Like the French Resistance, tiny in its day but of apparently unlimited manpower since the war ended, for some people it's not obvious which side to be on until the dust's settled."

There's even a phrase for this: "maquis d'apres-guerre" ("resistance fighter, postwar")

It culminates in Chirac bending over and receiving a ceremonial German sausage.

I was just going to post that. It was truly LBJ's finest moment.

I heard a story on radio the other day that when de Gaulle was pulling out of NATO and wanted the Americans out, LBJ told Sec o' State Rusk to ask de Gaulle if that included the graves. Rusk hemmed and hawed and said he couldn't ask de Gaulle that. LBJ ordered him to do so. de Gaulle, in the meeting with Rusk, closed his materials, stood up, and left without a word.
