Court rules strippers must at least wear ID cards

Adult entertainers in Houston will have to abide by a city ordinance that requires them to display their city licenses while performing, a federal appeals court has ruled.

"With this opinion in hand, we will start enforcing that requirement," said Don Cheatham, an assistant city attorney.

The 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans last week reversed its earlier ruling and upheld the city's requirement that dancers "wear and conspicuously display a city-issued identification card while performing."

The city has argued that the license display will allow police officers to determine more easily whether a performer is complying with city regulations.

The industry contends that its businesses are singled out for such treatment and that requiring dancers to display their real names could endanger their safety. Most perform under stage names.

"I do not know where the city gets the right to say that a person has to have that form of identification on them. In no other business does the city dictate that," said Nelson Hensley, a lawyer representing several of the clubs and businesses.

In 1997, the City Council unanimously approved tougher regulations of sexually oriented businesses, including the license display requirement.

In upholding the display requirement, a 5th Circuit panel also turned down the adult businesses' request that the entire court hear the case.

Hensley said he now will ask the U.S. Supreme Court to consider it.

Hey Counselor -- you sure that's an "opinion" you've got "in hand"?

The long and the short of it is that the City is probably looking for a way to get some free peep shows, and then some fines from it.

Great point. Girls working and earning a living have fewer rights than illegal aliens. Illegals do not have to display any ID at any time. Meanwhile, young girls (some actually pay their way through college while dancing) now must have every customer know their real full name, and address.

So, if they can require that strippers openly display their ID's, home addresses and full legal name; why not that obnoxious returns clerk at the store? Or that bartender who won't serve me another drink? What about that cop that gives me a ticket? Or are these invasions of privacy only good for 'bad girls'?

It says a city Id. So I imagine it's not their bio. It'll just probably be name and some info. But then again, who doesn't know how to use a phone book?

But if the city can order 'Strippers' to reveal their identity publically, then they can order 'everyone' to do the same. This is crossing the line, IMHO.

Why are they just honest, like politicians used to be?

Go back to the direct and honest approach.

You can only STRIP if you have sex with the local officials first.

Cuts out the many, many middlemen, and gets to the real point of it all.
