Quite a few FReepers have attacked John Kerry for visiting Reagan's coffin and paying his respects to the man. I think this is wrong.
If he hadn't paid his respects, the same people would be throwing a fit.
John Kerry did not wait in line: Neither did other dignitaries (aka "important people who are not celebrities"). Neither did Arnold Schwarzenegger. Do you think George W. Bush should wait in line? Please. That's pathetic. John Kerry is, by virtue of being the presidential candidate for a major political party, more important than the rest of us. Just like George W. Bush was more important than the rest of us while he was running for president in 2000. Get over it.
Kerry gave a "thumbs up" in his limo: someone cheered for him, so he responded with a thumbs up. It's a pretty sedate response. Get over it.
Kerry bragged about opposing Reagan's policies in the past: Well, yeah. John Kerry is a left-wing Democrat and Former President Reagan was a right-wing Republican. We live in a democracy and people are allowed to disagree about this sort of thing. Whether or not Kerry was right to disagree with Reagan (I don't think he was), we should still begrudge Kerry the right to disagree.
See also the following thread to get perceptions of people who watched F'n's photo op live and said the photographer entered WITH him from the holding room. (How did they find a room big enough to hold his ego, I wonder?)
I just think it's wrong to attack Kerry now, during this time when it seems like everyone on FR is on the edge of their seats looking out for instances of people disrespecting Reagan. This is not the time for attacks. John Kerry has not done anything recently to merit a personal attack on him.
You are entitled to your opinion, but stating the obvious is not an attack. GWB is dominating the world and national scene with Normandy, the G8 conference, the UN vote on Iraq, and Reagan's funeral. Kerry is off the screen, so he decided to use this occasion to get press play and grandstand at the expense of Reagan. He didn't even have the courtesy to ask Mrs Reagan if she had any objections to his coming.
He could have waited until the body was brought to DC to lie in state at the Capitol. But then, he would have been one of 535 Congressmen. Kerry wants to create the impression that he eschews partianship and is really just a moderate embracing a right wing ideologue. He is also trying to act Presidential.
Kerry is a despicable hypocrite and opportunist who defiled an event in honor of the most popular President in the last half of the 20th Century for personal political advantage. It is far from "paying his respects," but rather, a calculated move to get on the evening news. Kerry deserves condemnation for his actions. I hope some in the media will pick up on Kerry's craven behavior.
I agree. He's (Kerry) just doing his job. That's what he was elected to do, and that's what his supporters will vote for him to do in November: to fill an empty suit, to prance and posture, to pose for the cameras, to grandstand, to flash victory signs, thumbs up and high fives with the visiting American-African "clergymen"! Stop the bashing already!
EXACTLY!!!! He just "happened" to be in CA for his daughter's graduation from Film School.....so he thought he'd go by and "pay his respects"......????? Hardly!!! Does anyone believe this for a moment????? Does anyone know the LOGISTICS of getting him over there, safely and then HOLDING UP THE LINE SO HE COULD GO IN FOR HIS "PHOTO-OP"????? This viewing was meant for THE CITIZENS OF CALIFORNIA!! Kerry will have PLENTY of time to "pay his respects" in DC, without putting the regular folks at a disadvantage and taking up THEIR precious time. This man who wants to be President didn't have this cross his MIND????
Also, I understand there were NO CAMERAS allowed....what was Kerry doing bringing his own photographer??? The man was within 2 ft. of Kerry's face the entire time. We're going to see this in a campaign ad....you JUST KNOW IT!!!!!!! Look at the video...as they are leaving the library, the videographer is right there and Kerry mugs right to the lens as they are walking out.
This guy has every right to "pay his respects" but when he does it and displaces the good folks of California, it's ignorant and opportunistic baloney!! The ONLY reason Kerry went was because he KNEW he would stop traffic. In DC he will be lost in the crowd AND HE KNOWS IT!!!!!!!! The guy is about as transparent as Christina Aguillara's underwear in her next video. What an idiot. He has a right to go.....SURE.....but WE HAVE A RIGHT TO CALL AN IDIOT AND IDIOT, TOO!

You really should seek some professional help about your extremely low self esteem.
You realize, the Govenator & his wife were there by invitation from Mrs. Reagan, right?
One can look thru my posting history and see that I am a very sturburn lady who never spellchecks. ;->
I am not sure that you are needed to point it out.
I saw it with my OWN eyes.
You know the picture we've been seeing for the last 18 hours, the one of the guards and the camera shot over the casket, with the people walking behind it?
Well, all of a sudden, here comes a VIDEO camera guy behind the people paying their respects.....he actually walked behind them near that wall with the etching on it.
He then proceeded to turn around, dragging his cords, and turn his camera back to where Kerry was, searching for him.
At no time since I have started watching has anything remotely close to that happened.
I could just puke.
The library just announced that 70,000 people have paid their respects!
I watched it live on television. I didn't NEED someone to report it. The photographer came in before Kerry. It was the cheapest stunt I have ever seen on national television.
Don't bash Kerry?
Why in the world would you want to chastise Freepers? This only divides us.
This kind of shameless, opportunistic crap that Kerry pulled today is the very stuff that galvanizes conservatives.
We are not politicians. We do not have to give a carefully worded response as those in authority do. We are the salt of the US.
The whole strength of the conservative movement, in my opinion, was due to conservatives tired of rolling over and taking it. I see it as promising that we are vigilant and relentless.
Go Freepers!
I am pretty sure that I am. Hold on, let me ask my husband..
Yep, he thinks I am a lady also. ;->
You need to RELAX.
It was the cheapest stunt I have ever seen on national television.
BUMP.
Exactly right.
DEPMA. Got it?
