It isn't a lie. The democrats ARE more closely associated in the minds of most people with the civil rights movement.

Calvin Coolidge endorsed civil rights legislation and lost every southern state in 1924 to Democrat John W. Davis of WV, who was later the defendant's lawyer in the "Brown v. Board of Education" case.
