Unexcused absence
Stoops came to mind Sunday in the wake of how the Texas Longhorns dealt with their loss to Cal State Fullerton in the College World Series.
They disgraced themselves.
They disgraced their school.
What a nice finishing touch to a splendid season.
Instead of winning their second national championship in three seasons, the Longhorns became the first team in at least 17 years to refuse to participate in the College World Series trophy presentation.
Aren't they splendid ambassadors for the University of Texas?
Let's be clear about who we're blaming here. The Texas players watched a bit of Fullerton's postgame celebration before retreating to their locker room to console one another.
They did not come back.
Leadership lacking
They also declined to open their locker room to reporters, as required by NCAA rules.
Don't blame the players.
They did what kids almost always do in such situations. They were disappointed, then they were angry, and then they were childish.
That's when an adult should have taken charge.
That's when Longhorns coach Augie Garrido failed to show even a minimal amount of leadership.

I believe you are being overly polite to call this man a coach. He sure disgraced the school and should have had his team at the trophy presentation. Duh, is anyone alive in Texas?

Not to worry, Augie and Costner will be about some town in designer clothes looking for some young comfort, as is their custom.
Augie is a jerk.
The Dallas rag also had an article today about his lack of class.
Normally I would root for a Texas team, but Augie lost me after his team was beaten by the OSU Cowboys in the Big XII tourney. When asked by the reporter what he thought of OSU he replied, "they're having their 15 minutes of fame." Nice touch.
Read what the real gripe is here. It is not so much that the "horns" didn't come back on the field; it is that they didn't let the chattering class ask them stupid, inane questions after their loss. The media, whether news or sports, is made up of the same self important twits.

Yeah, there's plenty of us alive in Texas ... just most of are not surprised by anything that comes out of Hippy High .
Are you kidding? Texas fans are bad sports, even in football they're rude, obnoxious and generally non loyal to the home team. When things go bad the fans leave early in Austin. They always seem to have the talent but rarely put it to good use.
I noticed that the media seem to have had a delayed reaction. Yesterday, they mentioned in passing that the "Horns had stayed off the field during the ceremony. Now they're up in arms, and their outrage seems forced to me.
Must be a slow news day in sports.
