WHAT is goin' on???

Just some chaff to satisfy the Saudis, pissed off that the AQ assets warehoused in Iran with the security services there for the past two years were impertinent enough to start ordering attacks in Saudi Arabia itself.

What the Iranians did to encourage this, I don't know. But I expect they had a hand in some double-dealing.

BTW, most of the recent bombings, Turkey, Spain, etc., have been traced back to figures in Iran.

Also, it's nothing new. Iranians have said for two years that they've "detained" AQ. The Iran/Afghan border story is probably bogus, but offers plausible deniability given the context of repeated stories that AQ "leaders" are in the mountains of Afghanistan and Pakistan.

It will be interesting to see who these "detainees" are.

Kofi Annan just announced that the UN demands an immediate halt to this recent surge of unilateral surrendering until the Security Council can meet to form a consensus as to whether or not the affected parties actually have broken any international laws or UN resolutions, regarding which he is "appropriately sceptical".

I wonder if the "We're still into pre-emptive strikes" speech was a clear message to Iran...

Either that, or a veiled message to Iran regarding ISRAEL'S will to destroy their reactors. My bets are still on Israel taking out their nuclear capabilities within the next 3-4 months.

It's all part of the mullahs' "cheat/retreat" strategy as it relates to nukes. Do something brazen, and then act as though you are trying to help the US. We might have let them know that we'll be far more likely to restrain the Israelis from bombing those nuke plants if they cough up some Al Qaeda biggies.

Dang, if Iran goes the way of Libya, GWB will be the greatest peacemaker in 100 years. That would be incredible. I think there is a vast thing going on thru back channels and with the increased alert. I think people are lining up not wanting to be on the bad side of GWB and I think they think Bush will win the election and with nothing to lose, he may go in and clean their clocks.

First we have the surrender of an individual, who unquestionably has ties and info. Granted he's disabled, and probably too much baggage for a band on the move.

The Iraqi's cracking down with 500 arrests. 500!

Now an apparent cooperation from Iran.

A striking day. Just wish I could find some follow-up on this. I'm not watching the tube right now, so don't know if there is more.

But I'll say, this individual might really have come from Afstan. He's an old timer against the Soviets, and some Afghan locals might have kept him safe for that.

That's not at all unprecedented. Remember how long it took to bring Khaddafi around to surrendering Libya's WMD materials and programs. And the bulk of the diplomatic back and forth came from the Brits.

Another member of the Axis of Evil will fall, moving North Korea to the head of the class...

BAGHDAD, Iraq — Kurdish security forces have captured 15 militants in northern Iraq, including one man believed to be a senior leader of a local Al Qaeda-linked group, an official in a pro-American Kurdish party said Tuesday.

Among those arrested late Monday evening was a man identified as Hemen Banishiri, reportedly the second-in-command for the radical Kurdish group, Ansar al-Islam (search), said Saadi Ahmed, a senior member of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan's (search) political wing.

Folks, I'm sorry. I'm not finding anything about this on the news websites. I'm embarrased. I caught a glimpse of Vestor's program where they were discussing the surrender of the Al Qaeda associate on my way to get a cup of coffee, then the announcement that 20 Al Qaeda were in custody in Iran. Guess I jumped the gun.

I will now take beatings.

I think the Iranian's have planned all along to hold out until the last possible moment. Well now is the time. About 120,000 Iraqi security forces are beginning to handle things in Iraq ,thus giving a whole bunch of U.S. freedom fighters nothing to do, which makes them very antsy to find some other Murderous regime to tend to in their own loving way.
If I am correct , watch what happens in Syria withing 30 days. They will seal that border so tight a fly couldn't buzz through without being frisked leaving a whole boatload of tangos in Iraq to die on the vine.

What makes you think that al-Harbi or the two others who also surrendered have fallen out of favor with the senior leadership?

And yes, the IRGC/VEVAK is pretty much autonomous within the Iranian hierarchy.

They've also been getting quite cocky lately:

Not too hard for Iran to figure that when old boy gets back to SA he's going to spill.

Tehran dredges up their "20 captured AQ", without specifying names, and the mullahs are covered, no matter who he says now lives in Iran.

They will get away with it too.

We haven't had any reaction to anything they've done or said lately.

You'd almost think we were ignoring Iran.

;-)
