Anyone know how far off shore this ship is? Captain refusing a search indicates there is something on that ship that's not suppose to be there.

I'm near the water in NYC. The doomsday boards last week were speaking about intercepted nukes so I'm sweating too.

It is so nice to be able to find a place with fellow news junkies! I don't miss a thing even while at work! What would we ever do without the Internet.

We would work.

Work? What's that?

I like to work, but need to get my fix every hour or I get cranky.

This is big news though, so my productivity may suffer. ;^)

A new man-made reef might just be in order.

We need more information on the type of material on board. Might be to nasty to risk splattering all over the place......

Just Damn! I hope its not a nuke warhead. Could cause a tidal wave even if detonated in open waters.

Actually it wouldn't. Many of our nuclear tests in Pacific during the late 50's and early 60's were done with a barge carrying the device out to sea for detonation. (The reason why is because we had done so many high yield tests that we were literally vaporizing the islands and running out of real estate.) If you watch the videos of these tests, you'll see that all it does is create a shock wave with a small amount of water being pushed in front of it. Once the shock wave dissipates, so does the wave.

If we're thinking of the same movie, it went off in Charleston, SC. The movie was actually one of those over the top anti-nuke movies which used to get everybody so riled up. The terrorists/"heroes" of the movie were scientist trying to show the world the "error of their ways".

I'm being to think he didn't get to the Port of Philly........the river pilots are placed on board when a ship reachs the Delaware Bay as it makes its trek up the Bay into the Delaware River.

It would have to be an 80 year old white woman in a rowboat to avoid incurring the wrath of the ACLU and the NAACP.

"For those of us unfamiliar with nautical terms--what is the "ship master?""

That is the dude who wears the funny hat and goes down with the ship and all that.

"Yes but they could have stopped it before it entered the port for US law to apply."

Since a clever terrorist might feint toward one port while out on the open seas and then change course when in reasonably close to deliver payload to a different real destination, we might be clever enough to wait until she actually enters the outskirts of a port in order to better ascertain the true target.

Good point. Do you think the reporter screwed up, and it was the pilot that actually saw something odd and reported it?

Incidentally, the Port of Jacksonville was shut down briefly yesterday, and all the traffic was stopped for about a mile along the drive that runs along it.

I think the Feds definitely have information about something coming in by sea, and it is then possibly coming into Philly (Amtrak goes through Jax), either directly by sea or by train from some other port.

latest on Fox

WASHINGTON — A report of a bomb aboard a Turkish merchant ship Thursday forced the U.S. Coast Guard (search) to escort the vessel away from the port of Philadelphia and out into the sea off Delaware, senior Defense officials told FOX News.

The ship's master notified authorities about the possible bomb, officials said. The information was revealed after the captain refused to have portions of the ship searched by the Coast Guard.

Upon reaching a safe distance off the coast, officials expect to inspect the ship.

This particular vessel is well known to authorities and its prior movements had been tracked, senior Defense officials said.
