Kerry Hunts Deer With 12-gauge Shotguns?

Apparently hoping to outdo Hillary Clinton's improbable attempt to reinvent herself as a duck hunter, John Kerry has tried to avoid alienating supporters of gun rights by depicting himself as a deer hunter. Mark Steyn will have none of it.

Steyn wrote in the London Telegraph yesterday: "He was in Wisconsin the other day, pretending to be a regular guy, and was asked what kind of hunting he preferred. 'I'd have to say deer,' said the senator. 'I go out with my trusty 12-gauge double-barrel, crawl around on my stomach ... That's hunting.'

"This caused huge hilarity among my New Hampshire neighbours. None of us has ever heard of anybody deer hunting by crawling around on his stomach, even in Massachusetts. The trick is to blend in with the woods and, given that John Kerry already looks like a forlorn tree in late fall, it's hard to see why he'd give up his natural advantage in order to hunt horizontally.

In Virginia east of the Blue Ridge we used shotgun with slugs or 00 buck.

Shotguns are the only modern firearms allowed for deer hunting in much of Maryland.

Same here in Jersey, but IIRC, no slugs, only buckshot.

Nothing unusual with shotgun deer-hunting. In some states, nothing else is allowed. Perhaps you can find something else to catch Kerry on. This one reflects your own ignorance.

Not really. 32.2 ft/sec/sec in both cases. It's just the slower moving slug won't travel over as much ground in that time.

Hey, I grew up in Wisconsin, and in my days and in my county, deer hunting with a rifle was illegal. Shotgun only was the rule. 12 gauge slugs. Now I've never seen anyone use a double barrel shotgun when hunting deer. I can't recall ever seeing anyone crawling on their belly either. My guess is that sKerry's hunting experience is about as real as all three of his Purple Hearts.

Pretty funny. I agree. Not too many folks here understand much about firearms. To further your point, sharpen your spear or roll out the catapult, lock and load with number -000 rocks. Make sure you'v got the elevation right first, since the trajectory is not all that good.

Years ago I worked with two guys, one from Pennsylvania one from Texas. After a couple of brews the subject turned to white tails, It was the funniest thing I ever saw. It almost came to blows. And both left certain that the other has never hunted a day in his life. I laughed my a$$ off. And yes, white tails do come in different sizes, depending on where you live.

The same holds true for hunting in different parts of the country, if your from out west, you'd laugh if someone said they hunted deer with a shotgun.

I lived and Montana for a while. In the area I lived hunting was synonymous with Elk. Nobody hunted deer, they were just shot (cheap freezer meat.)

But I have not once heard of anyone crawling on their belly while hunting deer, ever, anywhere. If this technique is used anywhere on this planet, I would sure like to hear about it.

I'm a WI native who hunts deer with my trusty M1A.....I sit in a tree stand.....on my own property or on the property of one of my friends

I cant see any reason for anyone other than Kerry the Snake to crawl around on his belly...but then that is what snakes do so I believe him...

As far as double barreled shotguns go....most are fowling pieces not suitable for slugs do to their chokes...so again Kerry is also doing what biblical snakes do....and that is LIE

He has only been seen with a double barrel or over under shotgun...there is a reason for this

and to severely restrict who can own even single shot and double barreled fowling pieces..

Kerry and friends think they are royalty and as such believe PEASENTS should not cannot own firearms that are semi automatic or clip (magazine) fed...

Kerry's goal if elected is to take away everyone's (read peasant's) firearms...by force...and steal them..destroy them...keep some for his buddies and his personal troops...

Kerry is a traitor...and will bring the worst govt America has ever seen short of King George and his storm troopers...

The point isn't that he claimed to hunt with a shotgun, but rather (1) that he claimed to use a double-barrel shotgun (which in over&under configuration is almost exclusively for birds and in side-by configuration is suitable only for deer hunting with buckshot since they don't handle slugs accurately); and (2) that he claimed to hunt deer crawling on his belly, which, while appropriate for topping crests, isn't a technique designed to get you close enough to a deer to dispatch it with buckshot.

Reasoned and thoughtful post......Although I still think Kerry is full of bovine scatology, and probably hasn't deer hunted, but a handful of times...if at all. He's a known lying dolt...for crying out loud. Hehehe....

I've a friend who's stalked whitetail deer....by crawling on his belly, but he was bow hunting.....I've never had that opportnity myself..but I would do it given the chance.

I could see where a hunter might bellycrawl some...to get within range with a slug gun.

There are areas of the east coast you have to use shotgun with deer slugs. It is illegal to be in the field with any rifle larger than .30 cal

In Massachusetts you may deer hunt with slugs only. However, you can bring any rifle into the woods that you want: tell them you are target shooting.

get some water based orange paint and paint LAMA on both sides like some of the farmers around here do with their COWs and HORSEs so these dumb ass city folk don't shoot them

and yes, here in NY it's shotguns and SLUGS ONLY except in the mountains where rifles are ok
