The National Weather Service has just issued a Tornado Watch for most of south Florida until at least 8:00 Friday morning.

Hurricane City is streaming live coverage at http://hurricanecity.com/live.ram -- their coverage includes reports from The Weather Channel, from observers on the ground, plus streamed reports from local Miami television stations.

Hmmm... just heard the 11:00 update... 120mph sustained (150mph gusts), path has just moved east a tad, I'm no longer hearing anyone saying 'weak category 3', and strengthening is forecasted.

Actually, I like storms. What is bad around here, though, is the lightning. North central Florida has the most lightning strikes of any place in the US. I cringe when I go out for the mail. LOL

Waiting for the inevitable "Women and minorities affected most" post.

This is ANOTHER hurricane that will hit Florida since President Bush declared an end of hostilities on May 1st...../sarcasm

I'm thinking his name is Charlie and not Bonnie.

Thank you!!!!!!!

He's been reading over my shoulder and laughing as hard as I am about the jokes!!!

In all seriousness, hurricanes are not something to laugh about - but keeping a sense of humor does help relieve much of the stress that comes with the preparation and living through.

May the Good Lord remain with all in the path.

I've never personally seen it, but I know how it works. The problem with this storm is the direction it is supposed to move in relation to Tampa Bay (which will trap the water).

IF things turn out how the NHC envisions, this will be a catastrophic storm in regards to property losses (quite possibly the most expensive natural disaster ever). I would not be surprised one bit to see whole areas swept out to sea under a 10-15 foot surge. If that happens, this storm will dwarf the costs of Andrew. I'm just hoping it does not strengthen too much once it gets out into the bath water of the Gulf.

Leesburg is not all that close to Tampa and pretty far inland. The winds may die down over land before reaching them. Hopefully, no tornados will spawn. No storm surge to worry about up there but we've gotten so much rain here lately that there might be flooding due to rains.

They'll be fine! GG

You mean all our nice dredged beaches will disappear (again)? :-) We already have one place called Hurricane Pass (due to scouring), I expect will see some more.

That's what's so nice, Amelia. You don't sit around worrying about earthquakes. Slam, bam. I was in Santa Clara, CA, for the Loma Prieta quake. Disney's E-ticket rides couldn't be better. And then it's over.

What was the strength of Hurricane Andrew? Stronger than this or same?

You have to admit, there's nothing like watching a cumulonimbus clous fro a distance, and seeing the internal lightning bolts flash around!

How about 'heat lightning', those flashes of light that flare up on a hot night in a cloudbank? The cool thing is that they're silent.

I used to be a purple over in Pasadena! We've moved farther north and inland in the meantime. Taking the patio furniture and what potted plants I can move into the garage and hoping the roof holds. My house is pretty new so it's clipped, but I have solar panels on the roof to heat my pool. Hope they hold!

Were you able to get water? Everyone is out around here. I have some and I'll fill the bathtubs in the morning.

Good luck! GG

Andrew was a strong 4, perhaps a 5.

Andrew was a Cat five. Absolutely devastating. This will probably be a three.

"He's been reading over my shoulder"

That would be our bonnie prince, I'm thinking. Actually, I love the humor here, but I do get worried about our people from time to time, and this is one of those times.

I had to look up where these are in relation to the hurricane. Looks like Havana is going to take a pretty hard hit. Gitmo is all of the way on the other side of Cuba, should be ok.

Andrew was a strong Category 4 storm at landfall, I believe sustained winds were around 145mph.

This is a different kind of event thus far (but couls be just as bad, or worse). it will be hitting a much more densly populated area that is much more prone to big storm surge.
