1971 Flashback: VFW Chief blasts John Kerry - calls him an opportunist
The New York Times Archives (No Link) | May 29, 1971 | nwrep

WASHINGTON: The head of a war veterans group said yesterday that United States troop withdrawals from Vietnam should be done at a rate matching the release of United States prisoners of war.

Herbert Rainwater, commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, also said ... "the image that is being presented to the American people by the media of the United States involvement in Indochina has not been hindered by facts."

He referred to the appearance before the Foreign Relations Committee of a former lieutenant, John Kerry.

"He is an opportunist taking advantage of a very confused minority," the V.F.W. commander declared, saying he had heard that Mr. Kerry intended to seek political office.

Kerry is alot of things that are un-American. This is indeed just one of them. I agree -- you can read his strategy in the fact that he talks and says absolutely nothing. No agenda, no vision, no clear plan for America, weak on American defense, anti-military, pro-Socialism, pro-big government taxation, but first and foremost....with the goal of simply getting into the White House. The rest of American issues is quite secondary at best.

Just another Clinton. Just another liberal Democrat. Just another Marxist.

It says alot about what the Democrat Party has degenerated into.

This is wonderful!

We have Kerry's own words to use against him. IMO, this is the best plan of attack against him. No 'he said, he said' issues...just facts. Kerry can't dispute himself. Well, on second thought...

Many people are unfamiliar with details of Vietnam, particularly things like Swiftboat use and Cambodia issues, but lots of people remember how difficult life was for returning Vets...thanks in large part to Kerry and his anti-war pals.

His Senate record (still largely ignored by the MSM) and his Senate testimony are his weak points.

This is no time to go wobbly.

This following excerpt from 6/30/71 on the Dick Cavett show reveals how JFnK thinks.

MR. CAVETT: No one has said that there'll be a bloodbath if we pull out, which is a cliche we used to hear a lot. Does either of you still think there would be a –

MR. O'NEILL: I think if we pull out prematurely before a viable South Vietnamese government is established, that the record of the North Vietnamese in the past and the record of the Viet Cong in the area I served in at Operation [unintelligible] clearly indicates that's precisely what would happen in that country.

MR. CAVETT: That's a guess, of course.

MR. KERRY: I –

MR. O'NEILL: I'd say that their record at Thua, at Daq Son [phonetic spelling], at a lot of other places, pretty clearly indicate that's precisely what would happen. Obviously, in Thua, we've discovered, how many, 5,700 graves so far, at Daq Son four or five hundred.

MR. KERRY: The true fact of the matter is, Dick, that there's absolutely no guarantee that there would be a bloodbath. There's no guarantee that there wouldn't. One has to, obviously, conjecture on this. However, I think the arguments clearly indicate that there probably wouldn't be. First of all, if you read back historically, in 1950 the French made statements – there was a speech made by, I think it was General LeClerc, that if they pulled out, France pulled out, then there would be a bloodbath. That wasn't a bloodbath. The same for Algeria. There hasn't been. I think that it's really kind of a baiting argument. There is no interest on the part of the North Vietnamese to try to massacre the people once people have agreed to withdraw. There's just no pur- – I realize that there would be certain political assassinations, and that might take place. And I think when you balance that against the fact that the United States has now accounted for some 18,600 people through its own Phoenix program, which is a program of assassination, and when you balance that off against the morality of the kind of bombing we've been doing in Laos and the kind of destruction wholesale of the country of Vietnam, which amounts to some 155,000 civilians a year killed, then I think to talk about four or five thousand people is lunacy in terms of the overall argument and what we're seeking in Southeast Asia.

Scary thinking from a possible POTUS!

It is scary -- yet the lock-steppers would support this guy into oblivion. The idea is beyond belief, but there are just too many that don't care about America --- only themselves...so they will follow and believe anyone who walks them down the yellow brick road of liberal fantasy...

And now to appeal to the moderate democrats he says, I may have gone a little over the top when I was a young man. This flip-flopping POS will do and say anything to get elected. If he does we will look back on Carter/Clinton as good guy's!

Hiya Crusty -- interesting you mention that comparison. I was thinking that the other night -- would Clinton be rated better than Kerry. I finally decided they were about equal on the scumbag and liar scales. It is truly sad that this country (its citizens) have degenerated to the point of allowing this trash to exist in Washington.

There just is no accountability, no standard of excellence, and no outrage from the voting public that it should not be. This raises an even more sinister question: "HAS THE LIBERAL AGENDA BEEN SO SUCSESSFUL, THAT IT HAS DUMBED DOWN THIS COUNTRY INTO SUCH A STATE OF DEPENDENCY ON GOVERNMENT THAT IT CANNOT SEE GOVERNMENT AS BEING ANYTHING BUT RIGHT"? -- no matter what it does or says??? Was not the era of Clinton's atrocities, and the protection he received from his supporters in the liberal media, testimony to this fact???

Has the great American experiment failed??
