Some of them were just babies, probably in a pre-school portion of the complex. Amongst all the horror and death, I find this photo of a baby safe in the arms of big, burly Russian officers to be comforting. The little fella is not even crying.

Another baby, this one in the arms of a Russian police officer. A ray of hope emerging from the charnel house...

KABC TalkRadio interviewed one of the "Satellite Sisters," (___?) Dolan, who lives in Moscow. She said that the day the terrorists stormed the school was "Return to School Day" considered to be nearly a National holiday in Russia.

Little girls go to school with large bows in their hair, kids get all dressed up and entire families, including Mom and Dad, baby sisters and brothers, Grandma and Grandpa all show up at the schools with flowers, candies and gifts for the teachers and school staff.

According to Ms. Dolan of the "Satellite Sisters" the extended families every year look forward to and thoroughly enjoy celebrating the first day of school with their young ones at the schools. The first day of school celebration goes on all day long. That probably accounts for the diverse ages of the victims and sadly, the timing of the terrorists.
