Hurricane Ivan death toll in Grenada now 20 (category 4 storm; forecast track: Jamaica, Cuba, U.S.)

Hurricane Ivan killed at least 20 people as it laid waste to the tiny spice island of Grenada, officials said Wednesday as the storm swept through the Caribbean heading west.

Ivan, a dangerous Category 4 storm on a five-step scale of hurricane intensity, slammed into Grenada, a volcanic island of 90,000 people in the southeastern Caribbean on Tuesday, flattening or badly damaging homes and cutting power.

“Our diplomats are reporting that there are 20 confirmed deaths,” said a U.S. State Department official in Washington.

The airport in the former British colony was closed, and authorities were trying to open it for emergency flights, the official said.

With the island cut off, the extent of the damage began to emerge only on Wednesday.

Last night I predicted Mississippi. It looks like the experts are projecting US landfall somewhat east of there.

Over the weekend I had predicted to some friends that if this was a particularly bad hurricane that someone would be calling it "Ivan the Terrible." Sure enough, I just heard a newscaster on CBS radio call it "Ivan the Terrible."

Gusts of 170mph... Let's hope it batters itself on Cuba (sorry to the Communist serfs, but they should have long ago overthrown the beared worm)

If it hits Cuba, it'll probably tear through the Keys. Somewhere or other, I have a picture somewhere on this computer or my old one of a houseboat on Key West's old Houseboat Row at a 45 degree angle being lifted up over the seawall from the storm surge of Hurricane Georges (I think).

May the good Lord direct this storm between Cuba and Honduras so that neither is badly harmed. May the good Lord weaken this storm in the Gulf and spin it around to nothing. May the good Lord show His mercy and power.

In Jesus' precious name I pray for all to be spared.

If it hits Cuba Castro will claim that it is a CIA plot. My family is in Havana. Last Hurricane they went four days without water and more without electric. God know what will happen this time with this terribly strong storm.

That's nice to hear. I don't have friends or relatives at either but your prayer is appreciated just the same.
