Authenticity backed on Bush documents By Francie Latour and Michael Rezendes, Globe Staff | September 11, 2004

After CBS News on Wednesday trumpeted newly discovered documents that referred to a 1973 effort to ''sugar coat" President Bush's service record in the Texas Air National Guard, the network almost immediately faced charges that the documents were forgeries, with typography that was not available on typewriters used at that time.

But specialists interviewed by the Globe and some other news organizations say the specialized characters used in the documents, and the type format, were common to electric typewriters in wide use in the early 1970s, when Bush was a first lieutenant.

Philip D. Bouffard, a forensic document examiner in Ohio who has analyzed typewritten samples for 30 years, had expressed suspicions about the documents in an interview with the New York Times published Thursday, one in a wave of similar media reports. But Bouffard told the Globe yesterday that after further study, he now believes the documents could have been prepared on an IBM Selectric Composer typewriter available at the time......

13-point vertical spacing--not available until word processors hit the scene. Point, match, game over.

It's hilarious to see the dem shill media run this dead horse. Imagine if you will the planning and preparation that went into this smear campaign: the dems (DNC and Kerry Campaign) come up with the docs, the politicians and press are briefed beforehand, a massive media onslaught is carefully planned; Harkin and McAwful will get up and denounce the prez, the MSM will express cautious concern at first, then outrage at the "serious allegations", talking heads book "experts" for weeks of media coverage. Then your horse gets shot out from under you as the gate opens. Now you're left with tons of useless copy, scheduled air time that has to be filled (certainly not with document experts), and you on the hot seat.

What do you do?

Some media outlets are taking the 'head-in-the-sand' approach--"forgeries? I don't see no stinkin' forgeries!" and simply forge ahead with "The Plan" like nothing happened. Others take the painfully embarrassing approach of "it's not the evidence, it's the seriousness of the charges!". And still others smell blood in the water and turn on their compadres to capture market share.

I love it; I absolutely love it. Pop a big bowl of popcorn, folks--the game just started and the christians pulled out 45 magnums and are going after the lions.

I'm supposed to believe someone named Francie Latour??!!? Sounds like someone who is one pole short of a weekend job at Sam's Boston Barehouse.

Hey Francie, if you want to change the world, change your name first. It's hurting your credibility.

Gerry proves it ... I don't see how anyone can deny this. This kind of information WILL get out. The amount of work he had to go through to get the body text close is simply unacceptable anyway; all the other features are deadly to the belief too ... but the KILLER is still the precise measurements in the Letterhead. That's just too much precision. Not "impossible," I grant you, but TOO incredible -- given all the other feature problems -- to be believable.

These documents are fake ... period.

It's obvious what the defense is going to be on this: Rather and 60 Minutes are beyond reproach, Bush is evil, and those who questions these points are right wing fanatics...

There are animals with teeth like a tyrannosaur (killer whales) and with skin like a tyrannosaur (crocodiles) and with the same locomotion as a tyrannosaur (chickens), but there are no tyrannosaurs.

There were similar superscripts and proportional fonts and methods of automatic centering in 1972-1973, but not all in one machine.

THE BALL IS IN THEIR COURT.

They had the burden of proof when they introduced the evidence on 60 minutes.

We showed they had not met the burden of proof.

Now they are stalling, claiming we have to prove that their evidence is false. That's not the way it works. THEY STILL HAVE THE BURDEN OF PROOF. It's their evidence.

All they have to do to impress me is define a repeatable procedure whereby those documents can be reproduced, as closely and easily as we have done with Microsoft Word, using means available in 1972-1973.

They cannot.

Dan Rather is either an evil lier or a bumbling idiot or both.
CBS is full of whores.
The democrats have no principles.

I haven't had my coffee yet. Imagine if I had.

Oh and Dan, where did the docs come from? Unless the CBS producer in Texas was Colonel Killian's close friend, naming her obviously does not answer that question. If the answer is the Kerry campaign, CBS is nothing more than Kerry's personal smear machine.

Why would Rather talk only about the docs themselves and nothing about where they supposedly came from. He must know the source is totally suspect.

Hey, this amount work involved in obtaining precision in centering and superscript wouldn't be a problem for most LTCs, especially when typing a memo to themselves as a CYA document.

Most LTCs are renowned for taking such painstaking jobs away from enlisted men with the comma, "Here, let me do that. I'd 'Rather' do it myself and get it right."

Not to worry. I'll put a copy to good use. Don't have a bird cage, but my mini dachshunds need a wee wee pad now and then. The Globe is perfect.

They are in the "Seriousness of the charge" mode. There is no common sense at work here. Common sense exposes this fraud. I caught several of their pundits last night using these points: "don't question the memos, just believe what is in them, because we say so, and Bush is evil"...

"he now believes the documents could have been prepared on an IBM Selectric Composer typewriter"

So, get an IBM Selectric Composer and prepare them. By just sitting down and typing. He can collect $10,000. Except, this is transparent spin.

And, why in the world would Killian type such a memo to himself? (He didn't type, and the memo shows no errors. Amazing on an old typewriter.) The memo doesn't prove higher-ups were pressuring him. The memo says so, but there's no proof. It wouldn't have served any purpose for Killian. Makes no sense from the angle of why it would have been written.

For those desperate to sandbag GW, though, the memo is invaluable. Voters stop talking about SwiftBoat vet ads and Kerry's treasonous past. Instead, his RAT surrogates go on tv and call GW a liar and worse. As Carville says, Attack, attack, attack. Well, fine. The Swifties mean to oblige.

This worthless POS Charlie Pierce also appears on several NPR shows produced by WBUR in Boston ("Only a Game", "Wait Wait Don't Tell Me"). He is the lowest of the low and he, the Globe, WBUR, these programs and NPR are all in the tank for Kerry, Kennedy, and the rest of their fellow America Haters. They deserve your boycott.

Even if these were typed on a Selectric, that doesn't make them authentic.

There's a big trade in typewriters - see http://www.mytypewriter.com/ and others (no endorsement intended).

The democrats always have to have 'the story'. They know that 'the story' may be highly suspect. They know that it won't stand up to scrutiny by thinking people. 'The story' is aimed at unthinking people who will use it as a life raft. When the dems said "Its just about sex", they knew Bill Clinton had committed perjury. Even Hillary knew this in her 'take a deep breath' comments. But 'the story' was distributed so that it could fill a void in the minds of the party faithful, one that won't not be dislodged by fact or reason. The trick is to get 'the story' in their minds before fact and reason get a crack at them.

The shills in the media, if they placed probabilities on the sequence of events they are proposing occurred (The reserve had access to a 'high end' typewriter, Killian (not a typist) would have taken the time to change the font ball on this complicated typewriter, etc.), they would come to the conclusion that their story is very unlikely. But they are not looking for truth, their aim is to create propaganda.

It would be nice if someone honorable in the democrat party would recognize this and expose it to their less sophisticated members. I'm sure that behind closed doors, the Democrat leadership is laughing at the B.S. that they can get away with among their rank and file.

I'm surprised that someone has not already found Dan Rather's signature, created an apology letter to the American people, superimpose the signature on it, then make it look like it was published in the Boston Globe, and then make it available on the Internet. That way, the handwriting experts can say the signature is really his, so the letter must be real.

"But hey, what can you expect from a newspaper that not only published as genuine "alleged" Abu Graib torture pictures that were quickly proven to be fakes, but the pictures were x-rated, with male and female body parts clearly being visible."

And don't forget that the "gun" the soldier in those photos was holding was a paint ball gun. It didn't require a rocket scientist to see the hose clamp on the hopper feed tube to ID this "weapon". Did the Globe ever apologize for the loss of life in the Turkish bombing after they ran those obvious fake photos? If they did, I missed it. The Globe has innocent blood on their hands from those front page porn pics they published and using the Globe as a source of authenticity of the documents in question is comical.
