We didn't have type writers that fancy when I came in 10 years later.
Also, why is nobody asking where these documents came from. The Super secret memo to self Dept. at Walmart?
Dear JasonC,
"So, get an IBM Selectric Composer and prepare them."
It's been done. It was already mentioned upthread with link. Here it is again:

Someone with a Composer tried to reproduce the fake memos. Valiant effort, but alas, failure ensued. They came pretty close, but not close enough.
The Composer didn't do it.

The whole problem with this will be the Sandy Berger Effect. The SBE means that a damning story erupts and simply gets ignored. That's what will happen here. It will be denied and soon ignored. Independent voters won't have a clue what went on, and all Rather has to say is that the challenges to his credibility are "partisan internet and talk radio" people, and the independent voter will understand that this is nothing.
So we must figure a way at FR not just to uncover this kind of thing, but to also carry it through to completion.
Heres something that bothers me and I have not seen it pointed out before. Look closely at the CBS documents and you will see any numbers and their corresponding th or st are separated by a space, are superscripted, or follow the character l (which could be a the letter vs. a number)
Microsoft word automatically superscripts th and st following numbers.
If I was trying to prevent superscripts on Microsoft word I would skip a space or use the letter l for the number one.
Its clear to me someone was trying to prevent superscripts and forgot to leave a space on those superscripted numbers.
The guy couldn't type, and there's not a correction mark on the piece - plus there's centering and the "th" thing. That's all I need to know. People who don't type don't "do" special stuff like that.
However, at The Shape of Days, it says, "Dr. Bouffard called me again, and after further analysis, he says that he's pretty certain that it's a fake."
So where does Bouffard come down?
Although the documents have already been identified as outright forgeries by dozens fo different experts, there is another simpler way to determine whether or not they were created on a printer or typed on a typewriter. Examining the originals with a jewler's loupe will allow one to see how the ink was deposited on the page. If you can see individual drops, it was an inkjet printer. If the ink is deposited within a small indentation in the page, it was, most likely, either a typewriter or an older printer that used a print wheel and hammer mechanism.
If LtCol Killian did indeed produce his memos on a Selectric Composer, he appears to be the only one who was using it to prepare records relating to George W. Bush. You will notice in the other records (not the Rather memos) that whereever a "4" appears, it is open at the top, which seems to be typical for typewriters. The "4"s in the Rather memos are closed at the top. That's the way they are made by a word-processor. Interestingly, the IBM Selectric Composer also produced "4"s that are closed at the top.
See The IBM Selectric Composer Type Font Compatibility
It seems highly unlikely to me that LtCol Killian had access to the Selectric Composer while the personnel who produced all of the other documents in Bush's records did not.
Dear Gee Wally,
Read the thread's linked article, all the way through.
This website reports on the effort to reproduce the fake memos on a Composer.
They came close, but not all that close.
Not anywhere near as close as reproducing the memos in MS Word.
I'll repeat that: read the linked article ALL THE WAY THROUGH.
These folks found someone with a working Composer who COULD NOT REPRODUCE THE MEMOS EXACTLY.
The Composer didn't do it.
Here is the link to the section describing the experiment to reproduce one of the memos on a Composer:

Badges, Badges, we don't need no stinking badges!
That's a demonstrable LIE:
They don't even look the same to ME....notice the 1's have FLAT bottoms on the old document!
And if you notice in the copy of the older document, CBS has "doctored" up the "th."

They also don't mention that the man didn't type, his wife and son say the entire thing is bogus. I want to hear from the one secretary that worked for them at that base.
RE: "Kerry-Edwards: Forging Ahead"
Now we know what the F stands for.
Johm "Forging" Kerry
It is 100% mechanical and has no digital electronics. Since it has no memory, the user was required to type everything twice. While typing the text the first time, the machine would measure the length of the line and count the number of spaces. When the user finished typing a line of text, they would record special measurements into the right margin of the paper. Once the entire column of text was typed and measured, it would then be retyped, however before typing each line, the operator would set the special justification dial (on the right side) to the proper settings, then type the line. The machine would automatically insert the appropriate amount of space between words so that all of the text would be justified.
Seems like a lot of work for an ANG officer who just wants to jot down a personal memo, don't you think?
Kerry-Edwards: Forging Ahead!
That could be the "Sore-Loserman" of 2004! Outstanding, is it your idea?
He is angry and says the Globe misquoted him. There's a thread on it somewhere.
