Weren't some of these charges made in the 2000 election? The "Bush was AWOL" story certainly has been around a long time yet never proven.

Still, in theory, Burkett may have had access to any Guard records that, in a friend's words, "didn't make it to the shredder."

Then why didn't he show the documents then, when he originally made his shredder claim? It would have made him look a heck of a lot more credible. Newsweek can't figure this out? Sheesh.

The Boston Globe, the Times' sister paper, disputes allegations by Bill Burkett regarding Bush's National Guard record. The Times found Burkett credible enough to use as the basis for 1,000 words of speculation on Thursday, in which Burkett suggested aides to Bush improperly screened his National Guard files.

In a piece headlined "Doubts raised on Bush accuser--Key witness disputes charge by Guard retiree that files were purged," Globe staff reporter Michael Rezendes notes: "But a key witness to some of the events described by Burkett has told the Globe that the central elements of his story are false….George O. Conn, a former chief warrant officer with the Guard and a friend of Burkett's, is the person whom Burkett says led him to the room where the Bush records were being vetted. But Conn says he never saw anyone combing through the Bush file or discarding records."

Bush's chief of staff. In Burkett's account, Allbaugh told James that Bush's press secretary, Karen Hughes, was preparing a biography and needed information on Bush's military service. In an interview, Burkett said he recalled Allbaugh's words: "We certainly don't want anything that is embarrassing in there." And then how he claims he saw people going through Bush's file and putting files in the trashcan. He says he saw, at the top of the trashcan, a file with BUSH GEORGE, 1st LT. on the top of the trashed-files.

George W. Bush is not running on his experience as a Texas National Guardsman. While I consider memogate a hoax it is worth remembering that sKerry is trumpeting his Vietnam experience as formative. The US population is judging GWB on his three years of experience as a genuine war president, NOT 4 months of self-aggrandizing river boat action that occured some 35 year ago.

Memogate is irrelevant.

He's been quoted by many news organizations, claiming that Dan Bartlett and the Bush team "cleansed" the Texas National Guard archives of damaging materials in preparation for President Bush's run for the White House.

I had been 'loaned' from the senior staff and state planning officer of the Texas National Guard to the Department of the Army for a series of these special projects after angering George W. Bush by refusing to falsify readiness information and reports; confronting a fraudulent funding scheme which kept 'ghost' soldiers on the books for additional funding, and refusing to alter official personnel records [of George W. Bush].

A lot of the information is obscuring the difference between Army National Guard and Air National Guard. The Newsweek article never mentions any difference. Burket seems to have been Army National Guard. How would he have access to TANG records? And I thought Bush's records were sent to Colorado. Wouldn't Killian's, if they existed on file, also have been? I know they are supposed to be the personal records but that someone would have them 30 years later makes even less sense. Which is another reason why the whole Kilian memos look like total BS.

Burkett was impressive enough to cause CBS producer Mary Mapes to fly to Texas to interview him.

This is the same Mary Mapes that interviewed Killian's wife and son who said the memo's were bogus, and they didn't believe Killian wrote them. they both stated, according to Killian's son, that Killian praised Bush! However that was not included aspart of the CBS story!
