Also, not to be a conspirac theorist but...

George W Bush = GWB
Assault Weapons Ban = AWB

You see the similarities there. Obviously Karl Rove is behind all of this.

When was the last time a gun ban/law expired? And what was it?

Never in history, as far as I know.

When it was enacted in 1994--they put the "sunset" clause in to get some RINOs and Conservative Democrats to bite off. It was almost killed in Conference 3 times.

It turned out to be a disaster for the Democrats in the next election, including the first time a sitting Speaker of the House had been defeated.

I have a box of Padron Churchills Maduro'huming' for this seemingly insignificant but great moment for America...one little pebble on a white sand beach, but it's one...

Sorry, I didn't make that post clear:

"Conference" is a term that describes what happens when the House and Senate sit down and hash out what seperate bills they have voted on to become law. There are always differences, and they have to iron them out before they can take the bill to the President to sign.

I remember in 1994 calling my Congressman in South Carolina (where I was then living). He told me over the phone what was happening.

In the post hurricane world of FL, this is not an essoteric debate in a vacume. In 1992 after andrew, an armed homeowner was the only home security avalable.

It'd be great to see GW doing a little target practice down in Crawford with a full featured assault weapon.

Yep, then the MSM could demagogue those pictures for years.

But the important thing isn't for Bush to win.

The most important thing is that he whisper sweet nothings in your ear so you can feel good.

Nevada is a shall issue state, as long as you are not barred from owning a firearm and have no felony convictions or outstanding warrants, you are good to go. CCW will run ya about 50 to 75 for the course (training) and around 150 bucks to the sheriffs dept for paperwork, prints and pics.

I am out in Pahrump (about 60 miles outside of Vegas)open carry is legal and not unusual to see people in the store shopping with a gun on their hip.

Took me a while to get used to running a few errands after shooting, with my gun still on lol.. I guess I had been "California brainwashed" into thinking I was breaking the law or something :)

I want my 15 round clips!

Those would be standard capacity magazines.

I can't believe it's actually happening. Anyone that votes 3rd party at this point is crazy. The Republicans have killed this law, setting a precedence of gun laws going away.

I'm going by the "official" countdown clock on http://awbansunset.com/index.html. If anybody would know for sure, I'm assuming it's these guys. The various firearms boards I visit are using this clock, so I'm assuming it's true.

Will they continue to have some sort of special status that would prevent the installation of bayonet lugs, flash hiders, pistol grips, collapsible stocks, etc.? Or will it be as if the AWB never existed?

I don't think you need a lawyer to answer that. The law itself (Subtitle A--Assault Weapons SEC. 110102 of H.R.3355 103rd Congress) states:

(v)(1) It shall be unlawful for a person to manufacture, transfer, or possess a semiautomatic assault weapon.
...
(w)(1) Except as provided in paragraph (2), it shall be unlawful for a person to transfer or possess a large capacity ammunition feeding device.
This subtitle and the amendments made by this subtitle--
(1) shall take effect on the date of the enactment of this Act; and
(2) are repealed effective as of the date that is 10 years after that date

It will be as the law had never existed. That includes the federal definition of "Assault Weapon". IOW, as of tomorrow, there are no Assault Weapons, only semi-auto rifles, shotguns and pistols. There are no "high capacity ammunition feeding devices, only normal capacity magazines, belts, etc.

with a resounding hit from a well placed round exiting a full featured assault weapon

You still don't "get it". After today, unless your state has an AWB, there will be no assault weapons. What you mean is a full featured semi-automatic rifle of military patter. (Or a semi-auto shotgun or pistol). Let's not use the gun grabbers term. You still won't have an assault rifle, unless you can find a pre 1986 M-16, AK-47, etc. By definition, an assault rifl is a select fire weapon, either full auto or burst fire, of intermediate caliber. If you should be so fortunate to have a FN/FAL or M-14, a real one, not a semi-automatic version, you would have a battle rifle. Both by DoD definition.

No such thing as of tomorrow, not in Texas anyway. The President could take his practice with an M-16 if he wants to, today, tomorrow, whenever. President Kennedy was filmed doing just that, from a boat, back when the M-16 was new. (It was probably a full auto AR-15 then, because it had not been type accepted by the Army as the M-16). But what you mean is full featured semi-auto version of an assault rifle (such as the M-16).

I'd be happy just to see him blasting away with a standard capacity magazine in a handgun.

I hope all the naysayers will now support the President and vote a straight Republican Ticket. If we ban the dem party, we won't have gun control.

I won't be voting for my "Republican" congressman, Mark Kirk of Illinois. He is one of the most fervent gun grabbers in the U.S. House. He has a "F" rating from the NRA, and constantly attacks gun owners' rights at every opportunity. In fact, he co-sponsored the AWB renewal in the U.S. House.

Never in history, as far as I know.

True, but many of the provisions of the 1968 Gun Control Act were repealed by the 1986 Firearms Owners Protection Act. (FOPA) Most notably the provision prohibiting interstate purchase of ammunition, the requirement to present ID and sign a register when purchasing handgun ammunition, including .22 rimfire. I used to present my active duty military ID for that. :) )
